Can Malaria tablets be purchased as necessary in South America, as they are super expensive here in Ireland

Hi Guys....I am currently planning a trip to south america...leaving in January and home in June. I have recieved all my vaccinations and I have been told by my doctor that I will need to take malaria tablets for the entire time I am there. My plan is to begin my trip in BA, travelling to Patagonia, then to Brazil for Carnival and from there Im not quite sure of the plan but definatley taking in peru, bolivia, colombia and venezuela.......so from this rough plan Im wondering if anyone has travelled this route at this time of year and did you take Malaria tablets for the entire time??? and if so is it possible to buy the tablets out there as they are super expensive here in Ireland. Thanks in advance for any responses.....😊))) Reply to this

i cant believe a doctor said that

mosquitos in patagonia???

apparently the only risk areas are deep in the jungle up around northern central part of the continent.

malarone is the recommended one, you cannot get it in SA,
yes its pricey but has hardly any side effects compared to the other kinds. but on the plus side, you only need to take it for any days spent in the jungle and a few days after, thats it.

anyway, dont listen to me....
consult a doctor specialising in tropical diseas they will give you a map of risk areas and advise on it. (one option is tropical medical beaureaux in ireland)

you can buy my spare malarones if you want 😉

you will have a great trip

Hi Benny,

Welcome to TravelBlog.

I've been in Peru in April, and didn't take any malaria tablets at all. Would tend to agree with Matt that the jungle areas are the only time you'd need to consider them in SA. Reply to this

I was going to give advise but Matt and Jo said it all.I have been all over Sth Am ,except Brazil ,Venezuala ,Suriname and the Gyanas, and was told by my doctor freind ,in Lima ,not to take mal meds.If you do the Lost City tour ,Santa Marta ,Colombia, or similar jungle tours you should probably start your meds 2 days before and 2weeks after.Oh and I also have 5 months worth of Malarones, from last trip, that I haven't flushed yet.
If you are still worried ROE laboratories ,in Lima, are very profesional and cheap.I got my Yellow Fever shot there for US$23 ,there is 1 in Miraflores. Reply to this

Thanks so much for all your comments...but ya my doc informed me that I would need malaria tablets for the entire time i was in SA....wasnt super happy at the thought of taking them for such a long period of time.....so great, sounds like i will only have to take them when in the Jungle (which i will definately pay a visit to...😊)) again thanks so much.......
