To hire a car or join an organised trip...?
14 years ago, November 2nd 2009 No: 1 Msg: #91747
Hello,

I'm new here and also new to travelling, I'll be arriving in Auckland on 17th December and whilst I have friends currently in NZ it's unlikely I'll be seeing them until Christmas due to their commitments. So, this means i'm going to be alone for my first week travelling! Very scary, but, also exciting. My main question is should I hire a car and fly solo or join one of these organised bus trips where there'll be plenty of company? e.g. Kiwi experience/Magic bus.

There's a chance that I'll be able to drop into see some familiar faces but this isn't definite so I could be my only company. I love the idea of the freedom of the car but it's also nice to be with other peolple when exploring new places, so i'm torn really...any previous experiences to share out there? Also concerend for safety, girl, alone etc etc? But, also aware NZ isn't the most dangerous place in the world...and I'll be staying in hostels so no lone camping.

In the 7 days I have before returning to Hamilton for Christmas eve I'd like to visit the Coromandel area, Rotorua, Taupo and possibly stop in at Te Puke (friends maybe there). I'm assuming this a realistic timescale as the bus companies recommend a minimum of 6 days for a similar trip...?

Any help greatly appreciated!
