The best and cheapest way to work and travel.
We have return flights for Brisbane, Nov09-April10. This is a long time and we will have to work to fund our adventure. What is the best way of travelling between cities? How easy is it to join other travellers by chipping in for petrol? If you buy a car do you need to tax and insure it like here in Britian?
Any help would be great and more the merrier!

I live in Brisbane, and there are just a couple of things to know about buying cars.
Have a look at drive.com.au, carsales.com.au and carsguide.com.au - these are the most popular used car websites in Australia. If buying any car, get an independent mechanical check with the motoring association (RACQ in Queensland, NRMA in New South Wales, RACV in Victoria) - this is the equivalent of the AA in the UK. This will enable you to see if the car is mechanically sound before you purchase it. Of course, if a seller doesn't want you to obtain the RACQ check, then look elsewhere.
When you purchase a car, you are required to obtain Comprehensive Third Party (CTP) insurance. This covers injury to other people when you drive. Additional insurance to cover you for damage to property is optional, but it is a very good idea.
Fuel in Australia is much cheaper than the UK - figure on about 60-80p per litre.
