Entry requirements, booking international bus on-line

Entering brazil by boat, entry requirements say we need an on-ward ticket to show you arent planning to stay. Does anyone have experience of this? Do we need one? Thought that maybe we could book a bus to argentina on-line to prove we intend leaving. Also been told we may not be allowed to embark in lisbon without the brazilian onward ticket
