Help on traveling to South America
14 years ago, October 20th 2009 No: 1 Msg: #90037
Hi,
About 5 of us are planning to travel South America for a month, dates as per below. We have not booked any accommodation or tours yet and on a budget, but wouldn't mind spending on decent accommodation, around 30US/night

Arrive Buenos Aires 20/01/10
Peru (Inca Trail) - 22/01/10 for 4 days
Depart, Rio - 20/02/10

Question, suggestion or tips much appreciated

- We are in Buenos Aires for 2 days, any ideas how we can use the 2 days wisely, can anyone suggest a place to stay

- After the 4 day Inca Trail, we want to travel as many countries as possible, before reaching Rio, any suggestion on countries to travel, best method to get there, and places to stay?

Thanking you in advance.

You left yourself a very little time for this trip. I suggest you fly to Cusco right away. You need to adjust to the altitude and that takes most people a few days. Most Inca Trail hikes start from Cusco where the guides give you instructions and tell you what you need for the hike the night before and pick you up in the morning for the drive to the start of the trail. For after the Inca Trail hike, you might want to travel to Puno and Lake Titicaca and from there continue to Bolivia. Too bad you didn't leave more time at the beginning of the trip - Uruguay is only short boat ride across the river from Buenos Aires. You could also take a bus to Argentine wine country, Lake district in Chile, Saltas, etc. When you visit Iguassu Falls (I assume you plan to do that), you can view it from three different countries - Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. There are many beautiful places in Brazil and you don't have that much time to see it all. You should be able to rent some hotels for reasonable price. Cities might be a bit more, but you can probably share hotel rooms which would cut the cost a bit. Reply to this

HI all

another question:

Is it possible to train in between the south american countries?
is it better to train or bus? Reply to this

From my experience 10 years ago in Chile, I cannot recommend train. Buses had frequent schedule and overnight buses were most comfortable even then (even included dinner and drinks served by an attendant). If you are in a hurry, you may find reasonably priced flights. Next month we actually fly from Canada to Buenos Aires and from B.A. to Trelew and from Ushuaia to B.A. inclusive - for $1,100. Jana thanks for that. Flights seem to be quite high, especially since we are planning to go to a few countries. We have some time on our hands and probably think its best to bus or train, as we can see more of the country whilst we travel through it.

your flights seem to be quite cheap. Flights from Auckland to BA and return from Rio cost me AUD$1,800

Thanks for your help again 😊 Reply to this

You can use the train from BsAs to Cordoba. It is very cheap (tourist class +- 40ARS) and is 14 hours. The bus services are excellent but more expensive. I live in Argentina and travel alot. When in BsAs visit Tigre (just outside BsAs) and also Recoletta. Reply to this
