How do you best deal with people, at home or whilst travelling, who think their own culture or home country is the only way to live.
Everyone has met someone that just won't bend with the wind...and I do not mean eating monkey brains for breakfast. When does open-mindedness, when it comes to other cultures, was a bad thing?
Reply to this Advice from my Mexican-born boyfriend: Either you prove them wrong, or you don't deal with them. I believe most ethnocentrics are the kind that are afraid of culture shock - it would be too much and they would never dream of living a different way of life. Well, if that's the way they want to live, fine. Just show them your pictures, let them read your blogs, and wait for the envy to set in.
Reply to this I agree with Emily. Most people that are ethnocentric are afraid of culture shock and don't adventure travel. They stick to package vacations, tours and resorts which have been westernized. How do I deal with them? I tell them about my travels and what cool things you can experience if you only open your mind to different ideas. Though sadly, most people that are ethnocentric have had those ideas for a long time which are hard to shake loose of.
I wouldn't spend too much time with them or dwelling on them and focus on interacting with the interesting people from other countries who do realize their own culture isn't the only way to view the world.
