I would like some thoughts on how long this trip will take

Hi everybody,

My girlfriend and I have planned the follwing trip round South America but we haven't booked our flights yet. We would like to book them soon but aren't sure how long the trip would take. Sorry it's so long but here are the details:

We want to fly to Quito on 1st November (that much we know) spend about 2 weeks there, then bus it from Equador to Peru stopping in Trujillo, Lima, doing one of the alternative Inca trails then going down to lake Titicaca before crossing into Bolivia. There we want to spend a day or 2 in La Paz, go up to Rurrenabaque for a jungle trip then down to Sucre, go from Sucre to Uyuni for the Salt flats and to cross into Chile. Basically we want to go right down Chile then loop up Argentina going up as far as the Iguacu falls and busing it from there over to Rio. We want to do all of this by bus.

This is where the question lies as we want to fly from Rio to Manaus but aren't sure when to book that for. We want to get on a bus in Manaus and go to Venezuela, if we have the money see the angle falls, visit some beaches and fly from Caracas to Miami, not sure what date to book that for either. Any advice on how long a trip like this would take would be a great help. We though we'd be in Rio around 26 Feb and Caracas around 15th March, does that sound reasonable???

Thanks,
Mackin. Reply to this

Go to Chile and work your way back to Colombia. Busses are easy and safe.. In any case, DO IT! DO IT!!!! DO IT!!! Don't make reservations, just show up!!!!!!!! Reply to this

Hi Paul, and welcome to the Forum!

I moved this to the South America travel forum from the General one - more likely to get responses here.

I'm in the early stages of planning a South America trips in a couple of years time and am facing the same issue, but on a smaller scale. One thing you could do with flights is to either a) buy a fare that allows you to change your flights without penalty or cost - but this can be a bit expensive, or b) buy once you have started your travelling, then you will have a better idea of your itinerary. Hi Elguiquejake and Shane,

Thanks for the advice and for getting back to me so quiclky! I think we're going to stick with the plan we have rather than changing it to go through Colombia as, according to the guidebooks, the route we have is doable by bus and even going through Colombia we'd have the same problem of what date to book flights for. I'll have a look to see by how much flight prices go up the closer you get to your travel time. I know what you mean about flexible flights being pricey.

Thanks again,
Paul. Reply to this
