hi , I am traveling to ecuador next month, i plan to study spanish in quito for a month ! then
travel south ( to argentina, buenos aires where i plan to study for another month ! )
so I thought I would travel on a bus and visit some spots on the way down!
Does anyone know if a bus in this case would cost more than a plane straight to BA, ?
excluding money spent on accommodation of course.
..has anyone had bad experiences on buses ?
and can anyone suggest places I should visit along the way?

thanks alot : )
your help will defo be invaluable !

Well what I am trying to do is spend January in Ecuador. I am hoping to get about a week in Quito, 10-14 days in the Galapagos (did you go there), and then a week in Guayaquil. I would take about 2-3 weeks to get to BA from Ecuador. Did you find the costs of the buses to be more expensive than just getting a plane ticket? What was the difference in price? I would like to just kind of move along from stop to stop.

I hope you're enjoying BA. I heard it was a fantastic weekend there! Reply to this

Hey Tom
Dont worry about the costs of buses,in ecuador they pretty much charge a dollar an hour, much cheaper
than planes! Definitely do Galapagos, many friends have done this and everybody has said its fanstastic,
i heard its cheaper to go at the moment too.
I would suggest some what of a different path ( of course it depends on what you want to do ! )
Quito is an interesting city ( actualy im in it at the moment ) a week is long enough to explore,
though i spent about 3 weeks here becuase i want to climb cotopaxi and also the spanish lesson are cheap.
the old city is beautiful but is very dangerous after 7pm - every thing shuts
the new town, amazonas, is where the fiesta is at the weekend, and there are a great deal of
hostals around, all the bars shout at 3.30 at the weekend.
Visit Mitad Del Mundo, the middle of the worl, kind of touristy but still interesting and while you are there
go to Puluahawa, a crator which inhabits a quite a large village.
Quito is good for cheap spanish lesson and dance lessons to, about 3 - 6 dollars and hour.
I would urge you to reconcider Guayaquil, its very dangerous if your a gringo, and the city doesnt
boost a large amount to do, apart from the iguana park.
These are places that are the most popular right now in ecuador
cuenca - a renaissance feeling city
banos - surronded by an extensive mountain range and an active volcanoe
you can do adventure activities here
montanita - 2 hours from guayaquil, a friendly surf village full of fiesta

let me know if you have any other questions, where to stay etc, i know how hard it is
to research before the journey!

Hey Matt,
Thanks for all the info! How are you planning to climb Cotopaxi? How much does it cost and how long do you need to be trained/acclimated? I would really like to do this too.

Any idea how most people are getting around in the Galapagos that you know? I am somewhat on a tight budget and would like to conserve as much money as possible while still having a really great experience.

Thanks for all your help!

You know im not to sure about the galapagos ins and outs, unfortun there is no one around
at the moment to ask,, ill do a bit of poking around and see if i can send you some mail addresses.
Yeah , idealy you need about 3 weeks to acclimitaize, each week do a different mountain normaly its
rucu pichincha no need for equipment just good shoes and warm clothes
then guguaya pichincha, illiniza or rimunaui
im doing a 3 day trek that starts at illinza for a day to acclimitize then doing 2 days at cotopaxi,
im doing this tomorow so let you know how it goes bro.
costs about 250 dollars plus 40 to rent equipment, 2 days about 180

Hi how are you getting to BsAs? Are you travelling via Cordoba? If so I can really recommend a great place to stay where you could enjoy some country life! Reply to this

If I don't get to travel through Cordoba on the way there, I will definitely get there while I'm living in BA. Where would you recommend? Reply to this

Took bus from Lima to Buenos Aires a few years ago. WAY cheaper than the plane but took over 3 days on a tiny-non-reclining seat with people squashed on either side of me! Reply to this

i doubt there are any direct buses from quito to buenos aires. I think you'd have to take one bus from quito to lima then another from there to buenos aires. mattTurner - are you sure there are nice buses for Lima - Buenos Aires? I couldn't find them when I was there! If you were willing to pay extra you could get the crappy bus from Lima to Santiago de Chile then the VERY nice bus from there to Buenos Aires but that still meant over 2 days on a really crappy bus. I am starting in quito and would like to go to both argentina and chile. I would like to go from quito to either buenos aires or santiago, then go down to tierra del fuego/ushuaia, then go up to either buenos aires or santiago. Any suggestions on if it would be better to do santiago or buenos aires first? I will be traveling from mid april to mid june. So, it would be a bus from quito to lima first? about how much was that? how much was the bus from lima to buenos aires? do you know how much a bus is from lima to santiago? has anyone traveled down south from any of these places? I dont have tons of money, want to see as much as possible, so I dont mind dingy hostels or bus rides. Any suggestions for routes and places w/in the lower halves of argentina and chile would be awesome!!! Reply to this
