My wife and I will be travelling in Peru Bolivia and Chile this fall.
My wife and I will be travelling in Peru, Bolivia and Chile this fall, and we are no spring chickens. She does not like packing all her cloths is a packsack. She is thinking of taking a large day pack and a good suitcase with wheels, I am wondering is it going to be much problem, pulling it up and down the hills in these costal countries. She is small but is great shape.

I guess it depends on different matters. If you rent a car, suitcases will be just fine. If you travel by bus, but don't mind spending money on taxis to take you from busstations downtown, a suitcase is fine too. But if you travel low budget, with lots of walking from bus station to another place, I would recommend backpacks. I know there exist backpacks that zip open all the way so they can be packed as a suitecase. These are not the strongest suitcases, but serve very well this particular purpose.

Reply to this I don't think you will have a problem in Peru. My sister went to Cusco last May and she moved around the town very easily. So i don't think that you will be carrying your luggage all the time with you, just from the airport to your hotel. To move around, i think the taxis are 3 soles or something like that or you can take a bus for less than 1 sol Here are ways to transport yourself in Cusco:
and Reply to this I would just caution that if you are going to be dragging a heavy suitcase around to be extra aware of the altitude in Peru and Bolivia. Take time to catch your breath and don't over exert yourselves. Even those in the best of shape and us spring chickens can have a very hard time in the higher cities.
Reply to this But again, as saramiller says, if you are not on a very tight budget, the easiest when you arrive to a new city or leaving one, is to take a cap (in peru it's normally 3 soles, in Lima it's more expensive as the distances are bigger, in Bolivia everything is cheap. Just Chile is quite expensive.)
Maybe a large suitcase will be to much. I would recommend her to take one the small suitcases with wheels that are allowed to in the airplane. Most hotels in the three contries offers very cheap laundry service.
