Yay, It's not just me!

I took a small notebook and pen everywhere with me and would write EVERY cost in it and then enter in onto a spreadsheet whenever I had time. This would then calculate, average daily spend both in local currency and sterling (exchange rate updated individually for each transaction... boy do I love online banking). It would also calculate how much we had left, and calculate a new daily budget on that figure.

Even if we found a few coins on the floor they'd be entered. My friends all laughed at me, but we ended up coming back with money (which turned out to be a good thing as neither of us was paid for a further 6 weeks in the UK).

I didn't do much else with it though, but after seeing that lovely chart I'm seriously tempted to revisit it!

😊

I'm pretty anal about stuff like this. I love my spreadsheets. I love planning and I know I'll keep a close watch on my budget. But, one of the things I'm hoping to get out of my travels is a more chilled out approach to everything. I think I'm too highly strung about the little things - money, timekeeping, planning etc. I have to find a good balance - or maybe simply accept that I enjoy all of the above, hehe! Reply to this

I thought I was anal about money management and time management, but you guys beat me hands down. Charts, spreadsheats!!

When I travel I usually just take the days money out of my moneybelt and put it in a separate purse that I use to pay for and buy things for the day. At home, I do a best effort thing when it comes to budgeting. I usually think about what I can squash into the daily budget and then go out and buy it.

With time management, I generally just assign myself things to do, learn etc everyday and make sure I have done it all by the end of the day, so I always do exercise every day, always read the news on the internet everyday...... and dont let other tempting things take up all my time and prevent me from doing what I think is good for me.

I had two budgets. One was based off the expected daily costs for each country and my duration in each place. The other was for one time bigger expenses...sorta my "adventure" fund. This covered things like my 5-day live-aboard dive trip on the GBR (which was over 1 month of daily expenses), bungee jumping, ice climbing, etc. I found that this made it easier to truly estimate my costs and keep track of things.

If I had just gone into it thinking "$30 per day"...then all of a sudden I'd drop hundreds of $$ on some 2hr activity and not know how I just hosed up my budget. But with this approach, I knew I had a certain amount of $$ to spend on this stuff w/o affecting my lodging, food, bus, etc fund.

While actually on the road, I tracked every expense (yes, every bottle of water, every internet shop, every bus in Kathmandu, etc) I had in my journal and closely monitored my remaining budget. I met some people who just kept pulling money from the ATM and every few months would look at their balance to be surprised with how little they had left.

If you want to see how big of a geek I am, have a look at one of my trip summary blogs and all the things I kept track of.

Gone Global - The Bests And The Mosts

In it, you'll see this breakdown of my expenses.

Now that you've seen my neurosis, you might not be surprised to know I have it all in Excel and can give you cost breakdowns of all sorts of things - specifically the average cost per country. If you're interested, send me a PM and I can give you more details. If you're not interested...just laugh at me and continue on with your browsing 😉

I have been picking up work for cash money during the nights. That money is completely separate from my regular paycheck. I've been pretty good with not touching it, I just take the money and put it in an envelope and at the end of the month go and deposit it in another bank account.

Since the market is starting to tank again I was actually thinking about taking that money and investing it. We'll see how the economy looks in the next little while, hard decision... if the market gets low enough before my vacation, might have to postpone the fun :ยท

Oh, and my visa is still on the back of my closet self so I haven't been motivated enough to go and get it. And I've been slowly cutting back on the coffee shops. Its working... besides its getting too hot to drink coffee in the morning, sticking to water :D Reply to this
