Camping in South America
14 years ago, June 5th 2009 No: 1 Msg: #75083
Hi Everyone,

I just dicovered travelblog and I must thank everyone for their blogs and forums, they are very helpful as I am leaving Ireland for a round the world trip with my girlfriend at the end of August starting with 5 months in South America. As we are on a tight budget we are hoping to camp in as many places as possible in South America. I am just wondering if many people have done this? I know that if we stay in hostels it will be much easier to meet people and I don\'t want to miss out on anything by staying in tent\'s.
Does anyone have experience in this area?

Will anyone else be heading to Brazil around early september?

Thanks,

Welcome to TravelBlog Dave 😊

Yes, you would meet plenty of people in hostels. You would also meet them on camping sites. I am not so sure camping in the wilds would be safe, but it would save money if it is not illegal(not sure if it is or not). Robberies in Brazil are a bit too frequent for not having a secure place to sleep at night. So are things like tent eating ants. Another way to save money on accomodation would be to take night busses for long journeys.

I am going to Brazil in November. I will be staying in hostels. You could put a separate thread in the Looking for Travel Companions Forum, to find people to meet up with in September if you want.

Hi Mel,

Thanks for all your info. is there really such things as tent eating ants in south america?
I think we will try and split staying between the tent and staying in Hostels. I doubt we will be staying in the wild with the tent, most likely designated camping sites which there seems to be in most places we are going.

We are still trying to decide how long to spend in South America. We have 4 months booked but feel we might need some more time there as we want to see as much as possible. We start in Rio and want to travel to the north of Brazil and then around through to Peru. Travelling down to the south towards patagonia. and we leave from Santiago. Do you travel much Mel?

Thanks for all your help.

Fraid so! But mostly in the jungle.

We have 4 months .....

Lucky you!

I suppose, if I add up the travelling I have done over the last 20 years it is a lot.
These days, my travel time is limited to around 4 to 6 weeks per year, because I have a little kid to look after and we are restricted by school times etc.
