I speak little spanish but i know i will pick some up along the way
you will pick up some spanish along the way but it will be better to try and do a little ground work before you go cos life can be pretty chaotic on the road and despite having all day free, you may find you have less time to learn stuff than you do at home.
i am looking to meet up with other english-speakers and young people
in the hostel circuit you are 100%!g(MISSING)uaranteed to meet other english speakers & young people ..i dont really need to tell you more than that.
i also would love to find the best nightlife
i have not been all over colombia but i can tell you the nightlife is really something in Medellin. one tip for getting into some of the posher clubs is dont go in a group of guys, try to find a couple of girls to walk in with you as they are known to turn away single guys in order to keep the female majority inside. this is annoying but makes for a great nightclub when you finally do get in!! haha
on that note i recommend the city of "cali" , though i was never actually there since i ran out of money in medellin hehe though from what i have heard , im quite certain its a good place to party..there are loads of colombian songs about cali.
you cannot miss the carribean coast either (cartagena, playa blanca, santa marta, taganga and parque tayrona) you might get captured by the charm of taganga and end up spending a little more time than you planned.. many do.
please let me know any tips or tricks
tip:
when in the carribean coast there are many people who sell fruit juice on the street... try one called "zapote"
tip:
buy a cheap blanket for the buses cos they tend to put air conditioning very high
tip:
(this applies to all of south america) never disguard your drink, sleeping pills can be used to knock someone out and steel their money. its a rare occurence but common enough that people will warn you about it.
tip:
carry tissue around with you, the bathrooms in bars restaurants etc.. are notorious for not stocking it.
tip:
last but not least: (if you have time) no matter how crazy it may seem now, i recommend doing some salsa classes now before you go. you will understand when you get there!
