We are inter-railing around Italy for 3 weeks this summer and would like some ideas of good places to go and sights to see, any suggestions please!!!
We are travelling around Italy for 3 weeks this summer and need some tips of places to go and things to do and we are looking to go to as many places as possible. The places we definately want to see are pompeii, como, naples, florence, rimini and venice. Also we want to see the south of Italy (calabria region) and maybe few days in Sicily if this is possible.
Any tips and suggestions of places to go would be really helpful and also if you think we can get this many places in from north to south Italy in 3 weeks. Also if there are any must-see places we haven't mentioned.

But I;m sure you’ll have a great time and you will be able to see all if you plan ahead.
I took my mother a few years ago and we got to see Venice-Florence-Rome-Naples-Isla Capri in just 16 days!!! There are some great popup maps that are available, they just show specific city/town with popular sites/eateries/parks etc. and their map is great (never got lost). Of course must see Rio Alto/St.Marks Square/ride a gondola in Venice, David/Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Sistine Chapel/St.Peters Basilica/Coliseum/Ancient Rome/toooo many to name in Rome. You should be good with 3 days in each place a bit more for Rome so much more to do.

Reply to this We were there for two weeks this past holiday season, and the biggest unexpected highlight of the trip was Urbino. It's a bit out of the way but not too far from Rimini (incidently, how'd that make your list if I may ask?). A more beautifully preserved medieval hilltown you'd be hard pressed to find. Nearby San Leo makes for a nice day excursion.

Venice is on your list, rightly so, but I don't see
Rome. It deserves to be experienced at least once in a lifetime.
One suggestion I may add is to leave some buffer days in your itenerary ahead of time. You will get great recommendations while you're there, and you will also find places you want to stay a little while longer. Don't schedule your trip down to every detail. Go deep, not broad.

Reply to this Thanks guys the only reason we're missing Rome out on our trip is that we are going there for a long weekend later in the year so would like to take this chance to see places we usually wouldn't. Rimini was recommended by friends.
Any more suggestions would be great.

Reply to this well, you should avoid rimini, the sea sucks and it's a destination for mass tourism. for the seaside, the best places are liguria (north west), tuscany (centre), puglia (south). in puglia there are a lot of parties/concerts/festivals during summer (I would recomend, taranta), the places are beautiful and it's quite cheap also.
during summer avoid big cities like Milan cos it's really warm and it looks like a desert cos most of the people are escaped away.
naples is nice but, in my opinion, you should spend some days to the amalfitan coast, near naples, there are places like sorrento, capri, positano that are great.
then the centre of italy is great, cities like urbino and perugia are awesome.
venice is beautiful but it's also expensive, so if you are looking for tips about restaurants check
in the section "Lists" Reply to this When you'll be in the middle of italy, I suggest you to visit Umbria as well. Amazing place , where you can smell history, nature and gorgeous food

Reply to this I have put together a Italy Travel Tips for several of my friends based on our trip in June of this year and a previous trip I took that covers what you can plan ahead for (ie museum reservations), accommodations, points of interest and shopping. If you'd like, I can email it to you - just let me know where to send it. Generally speaking, I assume you'll hit Venice (2-3 days is plenty), Rome (you could spend 4 or 5 days here easily), and Florence (maybe 3-4 days, more if you want to go to other Tuscan towns). I also recommend Cinque Terre, Siena/San Gimignano, and Orvieto. If you go to Pisa, go to Pisa Marina too. Good nightlife and bars on the beach. Milan to me is not too different than a big city like New York so it wasn't a big deal to me but that might be because I grew up in Los Angeles.

takes some time.

Reply to this Lake Como, Bellagio in particular, is just beautiful. Takes about an hour on the train from Milan and trains go about every half an hour. It is so pretty; I have been in both winter and summer. Must be good - George Clooney has a house there!
Reply to this I am in the middle of my own Italy trip right now. I have to say that Naples was my least favorite. If you are interested in seeing the Amalfi Coast, which I highly recommend, you can stay in Sorrento. Also, Pompeii is just a short train ride away. Rome was breathtaking with all the history and the stature of the buildings. Check out some of my blogs, they are about my recent travels here in Italy. I am in Venice right now and loving every second of it!

Reply to this I always recommend the Cinque Terre (Riomaggiore and Monterosso being the two largest towns if you are looking for it on a map), but it is a bit out of the way from your listed points of interest.
Remember that if you are going to Pompeii, you will need to head to Naples then switch to a private rail line (Circumvesuviana). Just as a note to make sure you do not get lost when you cannot find how to get there on the Trenitalia website.

there are so many places to visit in Liguria! It is a beautiful region...
There are so many beauties here...beaches, little towns, food,wines marvelous and important monuments, events....you can go and visit Le cinque Terre (Unesco patrimony) but also Camogli, Santa margherita ligure, Portofino,Nervi, Boccadasse, Genoa(in this city there is a street Via Garibaldi that is declared Unesco patrimony) and more much more also like little medieval villages like Noli, Albenga, varigotti...I can give you more informations about transportation, hotels, restaurant, if you are interested ...This region is near to Toscana ...contact me if you want any kind of info!
