Lima/Cuzco - Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires - Santiago... best way?
15 years ago, April 13th 2009 No: 1 Msg: #69386
Hi,

In a few months I'm flying into Lima to start 5/6 weeks in South America. We have a few questions if anyone who's been before or could give any advice any help would be greatly appreciated!

- Is the bus from Lima to Cusco safe (as we want to start by doing the Inca trail) or should we fly?
- what is the best way to get from Peru to Buenos Aires? I've looked at flights but can't find anything cheaper than £260 one way, is there a train/bus and how long do they take?
- Is the bus from Buenos Aires to Santiago safe? Would anyone recommend a different way of getting there?
- Are there any sites around these areas people would recommend or also should be avoided?

Any bit of advice would be brilliant, thanks! Reply to this

Travel with "Cruz del Sur" buslines to Cuzco. It is a long busride but it is worth breaking it in 2 by stopping in Nazca and seeing the famous desert drawings "Nazca Lines"
The bus from Cuzco to BA is a very long trip but there is plenty to see along the way.You could easily spend your whole 6weeks just on this route and it would be a great adventure. From BA it is well worth getting the boat across to Uraguay even just for a day or 2.It is a country that alot of people leave out of their plans but it is such a happy, friendly ,well educated country.
If you would like more of my opinions on what to do ,feel free to message me Reply to this

The bus between Buenos Aires and Santiago is perfectly safe. It takes about 21 hours but you can break the journey in Mendoza. Get a night bus from BA as there is not that much to see. Buy the best class of seat you can afford. A bus from Mendoza to Santiago takes about 7 hours (depends on time spet at the border) and you want to do this trip during the day to appreciate the scenery. You could also fly, of course. FROM LIMA TO CUZCO
The best bus line from Lima to Cuzco is Cruz del Sur. It is clean, modern and safe and more expensive too, but it is worth paying it. Other bus companies are unreliable. As Paul says, Nazca lines is worth seeing it. However, flying is not very expensive too. The most reliable company is LAN and the most expensive too, but service is punctual and safe. However, if you plan to buy your tickets from your own country it is more expensive than buying them locally.

BEST WAY FROM PERU TO BUENOS AIRES
There are two main ways by earth. Going from Peru to Bolivia and then to Argentina. On the way, you can visit Titicaca Lake.

The other way is through Chile by earth. From Tacna, Peru, to Arica (1 hour), and from Arica (Chile) to Santiago (27 hours), from Santiago to Buenos Aires (24 hours).

A suggestion could be going by bus up to Santiago and then flying to Buenos Aires.

FROM BUENOS AIRES TO SANTIAGO
As above said, it is very safe and comfortable. There are plenty of buses going to Buenos Aires. The best scenery to see is going across the Andes mountains. However, if you have no enough time, air tickes from Santiago to Buenos Aires are very cheap (around USD 150 round trip) and there are several daily flights.

SAFETY
It is just a matter of common sense for taking the necessary precautions as anywhere in the world. The main concerns may be robbery. But all such areas are free from guerrilla, health problems, etc.
