Christmas is a peak time for travel and accommodation is expensive, especially in Byron Bay and the Gold Coast, which are the favoured destinations (along with the Sunshine Coast) for people from Brisbane.

In Australia, Christmas Day is really a family day and little occurs in the public sphere. However, Boxing Day is different, in Brisbane it is the first day of the sales and the shopping malls are packed with bargain hunters, the same would apply to the Gold Coast as well.

In almost all places in the week between Christmas and New Year's Day is filled with locals on holiday. New Year's Eve is supposed to be good in Byron Bay, but I don't think you can go past sitting around Sydney Harbour on that evening. Reply to this
