Cusco, Machu Picchu and Manu

Planning my trip and considering options

Late October and early November I will be in Peru. Lima for a day or so then Cusco, Machu Picchu, etc.
Anyone know the best times for Manu? And is the ledge there closed? I know there are many lodges, etc but I am talking about the ones in the Park itself. What about flights? I have heard some horror stories there so I appreciate any feedback.
I hope to get to Machu Picchu around November 1. No idea yet about where I'll stay. All options are open. I am trying to decide if to book things through a tour operator or handle it all myself. Right now the savings by doing it all myself don't seem to be that much as it appears rooms have gone up in price a good deal in Cusco and Machu Picchu. Reply to this

Manu lies in the tropical rainforest, so there isn't really a best time to visit it. It's amazing all year long. In the period in which you'll be traveling there will be less tourist.

What horror stories did you hear about flights, and on which routes?

If you are wondering about whether or not to book through an agency I recommend you search this forum for previous posts. Reply to this

I have been in rain-forest before so I know what it's like. I have heard that sometimes the flights into and out of the area are lousy and people get delayed or stranded. This is an issue for me since it will be near the end of my trip and I have to get back to Lima so I can get my flight back to Canada.
