Travelling round SA for 4 months. HELP!

I'm heading round South America in early May 2006, starting in Rio and ending in Caracas in mid September. Anyone gonna be there then? Any suggested routes?

I was thinking of starting in Rio, then head to Iguacu, and Buenos Aires. Then head down to Bariloche, up through Santiago to La Paz and Titicaca. Then over to Cuzco for Machu Pichu, up the West coast to Venezuela and the Galapagos. Finally heading to Caracas via Bogota.

I was planning to do this all by bus/ train. Has anyone tried a similar route, and has any advice on travel between these places?

How easy are internal flights to book, and are they expensive?

Anyone know of any good hostels in Rio, or the best areas to stay?

Am I being too ambitious trying to do all of this in 4 months?

Any help on these subjects, most welcome, and any other advice is always helpful!!

Hi there,
We're heading to Brazil in August and we've rented a place in Rio for 2 weeks (Aug 2 - 16) and we have 2 extra beds, since 2 of my friends can't go. We're looking for someone to share it with us. The cost is around €350 for the entire period, depending on the exchange rate at the time, if we split it in 3. Let us know what you think.

About itenerary, I can tell you about Brazil. Airfares are a bit expensive, but if you get a Brazil pass by varig, you'll pay a lot less and travel to at least 4 different cities. Must see: Foz de Iguaçu (the waterfalls), Fortaleza, Natal, Fernando de Noronha, Salvador e Rio. With this pass you could travel to all these cities for $500. Never book hotels on the internet. Just get there and find one you like. Prices are 3 times less on location. Remember that it's winter everywhere else besides in Brazil. So take a variety of clothes! Reply to this
