Advice on best way to get around South America in 2 and a half months
15 years ago, February 23rd 2009 No: 1 Msg: #63860
Hi all,

Myself and 4 friends are travelling around South America for 2 and a half months starting next week. We land in Rio and are flying out of L.A 2 and a half months later. We plan to bus through these countries in this order.

-Brazil
-Uruguay
-Argentina
-Chile
-Bolivia
-Peru
-Equador
-Colombia
-Mexico

Currently the only flight we plan on making is from Cancun (Mexico) to L.A. We know with 2 and a half months and this huge distance to cover some countries will be gone through fairly quickly.

Would this distance be comfortably managable in this time frame? Would we need to maybe fly by plane more than the once? If we would where would be best/cheapest to do this?

Any other travel advice would be much appreciated 😊

This all sounds a bit rushed considering we just spent 2 1/2 months only in Peru, Brasil, Argentina and Chile, but I would say it is not impossible... you will just have to be rushing through some places and probably missing some out completely.
We did Rio, Curitiba, Iguazu, Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Santiago all by land, and the buses around there are pretty good.
You will just need to pick which places to visit and which not to.
Also decide how far south you want to go... Bariloche? Ushwaia? Perito Moreno? then you will be running out of time.
You could make it by road all the way up to Colombia, but from here to Mexico you will have to fly. How much do you want to see in Mexico? it is a big country... Yucatan is great! but you will need about a week around there.
I would recommend taking Uruguay and Chile out of your itinerary. But it seems you need to do a lot of planning in the next week to work out where to go, otherwise you can do a lot of flying if you have the money to save time.
Good Luck!

I'm guessing it would take you at least 2 weeks of non stop bussing, a bit more because there aren't always good connections. How do you intend to cross the border between Colombia and Panama by bus? (If I recall correctly that border is closed, and you can only get out using a plane/boat)

I would strongly suggest taking a couple of countries out of your initiary. Even if you would manage to visit all of them, what would you gain... besides the stamp in your passport? Reply to this

Ok thanks alot for the feedback, very helpful indeed. What I think would make things a bit better and not so rushed (gathering from the feedback Ive received) would be skip Uruguay, skip Chile and skip Colombia. Then also add a flight from Equador to Cancun. Sound better?

Also you need to keep in mind we wouldnt be seeing the majority of Brazil, would just be from Rio south basically. Argentina would be no further south than Buenos Aires also. Am fully aware the vast size of these countries and know alot of them are out of the question. Hopefully things work out ok 😊 Reply to this

Big mistake... don't skip Colombia!
only joking... just because I'm from Colombia, but it is a long journey, and if you actually made it to Colombia you would want to stay much more than two weeks, and that will definitely through off your timing.
Good Luck!

Haha sounds very similar to what were doing. We're actually from New Zealand but in Ireland at the moment so kinda doing this on the way home. Yeh i'm sure once you're there we'll be able to figure things out pretty quickly. Will u have time?? Im not the best person to be asking that sorry but from what ive read sounds like you guys might be rushing things a bit too, as I said tho u can always cut stuff out when you're there. Whats your email address? Maybe you 4 girls would like to meet up with us 5 guys along the way?? Sounds like we could well be passing by each other anyway 😊 Where abouts you guys from by the way?
