Hi, I'm planning to do the Choquequirao - Machu Picchu trek this June with my girlfriend. We're exploring the options and deciding whether to prebook a tour before we leave England, book a tour when we get to Peru or arrange it independently when we get to Cachora. If possible we would like to arrange it independently when we get to Cachora because it will be cheaper, but we're not sure how easy this is to do when we get there. Has anyone else trekked this path independently (or with a tour)? Any advise would really be appreciated. Thanks, Jon Reply to this

I haven't done Choquequirao - Machu Picchu (instead did Choquequirao and Salcantay, both amazing trekkings!) but I've met many guys that did Choquequirao independently. There are some facilities along the way where you can camp/buy food/rent horses. It'll be busy though in june.

If you have any doubts about booking a tour, just wait till Cusco. You can book all tours there last-minute (exception Inca Trail, but otherwise all tours can be booked up to a day in advance) and it'll be much cheaper, compared to prices online).

I trekked Cachora to Choquequirao (and back) with a tour last April. We paid 180 USD for the trek and it was only myself, my gf, a cook, porter and arriero (mule man), and the path was very quiet, much fewer people than Salkantay. I would advise waiting till you get to Cusco (or Cachora) to book the trek. You'll pay far more if you reserve in advance, and it's much easier to negotiate face to face. The Choq -- Machu Picchu trek is becoming much more popular and you'll easily find a tour leaving in June from Cusco. Not so sure how easy it is to arrange in Cachora, but there is definitely one hostel/hotel in Cachora which organises these treks sometimes, sorry I can't recall the name. Reply to this
