Hello Denis 😊

I think airports everywhere are generally safe all the time because of all the security at them.

I hear things have improved in Guatamala since I was there 10 years ago. It was far from safe there at that time. Evenso, I would be careful to keep all valuables out of sight when in Guatamala city. Even avoid wearing gold coloured fake gold jewelery. If you are going to sleep someplace besides a hostel or hotel then make it the airport, rather than the bus station.

Hi mel thanks for the info although I never wear fancy jelery and always dress down most locals in third world countrys can usually tell if you are a tourist by the big backpag we carry.I know the airports are usually safe its just getting out of the airport and traveling to say anigua is what I am refering to.Everything I read says absolutly do not travel at night even in a taxy for fear of robberys is it really that bad. Denis,

I was in G.C. for a very short time in the last year. Admittedly, I flew in during the day but didn't really have troubles other than taxi drivers wanting to overcharge and then ask for tips, etc. I stayed in the tourist zone for particular reasons (forget the name, something like "zona viva") and walked at night without incident - other than being asked to buy every trinket possible or offer change.

The advice of dressing down and no jewelry is good one that you seem to already know. If you are a "white face" like me, you'll stick out enough anyway.

That said, hopefully someone who has been there more recently can advise better. Reply to this
