Hi. I am looking for some advice for travel in Peru (and possibly Bolivia, and Chile)

A friend and I are planning a trip to Peru for the month of June. We want to do the Machu Picchu trek (obviously this must be booked with a guided tour) but otherwise we are wondering what is the cheapest route to go... independent travel (ie book bus trips and flights when we get there) or book something like a 20 day tour a head of time.

Right now ontop of Cuzcu/Picchu we want to go to Arequipa, Lake titicaca, and the Amazon.. all of which will require busses/flights.

any thoughts?

Right now to do all of the listed above, (depending on the company), it will cost anywhere from 1900-2600 Canadian (about same in USD), for a 20 day trip. Reply to this

Doing it indepently would probably cost me around 600/700 Euros, including busses, hostels, tours, food, souvenirs and stuff and without having to budget on anything. Reply to this

I think you should do both, when i was in cusco i had some problems getting to Machupicchu, there's only one way to get there and it's by train (Perurail) and sometimes they over book so it will better to book ahead your trip if you also you need to see the machupicchu availability cause the have a limit number of people to enter by day.
I had no time so my trip cost me more than it's supposed to be but my friends booked ahead and use some of these

Always search the places you wanna visit to see if there's problems availability

Hi Jeff,
I’m a major advocate of setting up your own itinerary. It opens you up to meeting amazing people and seeing things off the beaten path. Traveling without a tour can save you a few bucks as well.

The money for the trip you are looking at appears to be very reasonable. But who cares. Peru is a very safe country. The people are honest and friendly. Bring an English to Spanish dictionary with you and have fun. Many people have more flexible schedules than ours in the States. They will enjoy stumbling through Spanglish with you.

I am happy to make more specific recommendations on locations, just let me know.

Amazon Tip: If you want to travel through the Amazon I can put you in touch with the NGO Project Amazonas, projectamazonas.org. They take volunteers on medical and education trips through the Peruvian Amazon.

Lima Tip: I have stayed at the Flying Dog flyingdogperu.com several times in Lima. There are three different Flying Dog Hostels near Lima, each with their own style. All of them are safe and the staff is really great.

All my best,

Hello Jeff 😊

You are probably back from your trip by now. So, did you travel independently or did you go on a tour?
