minimum 7 night stays in sydney hostels over new year - flexibility needed!!

Hi all,

I\'m going to be in Sydney for new year in 2009 with my boyfriend and also 2 other friends of ours so we are looking to get two double ensuites in a hostel.

Although we will be there for around 5 nts our friends are over from Adelaide for around 3 nights but many of the hostels (which allow to book already) have clauses that between 20 dec and Jan you have to stay a minimum of 7 nights - although I may be able to cope paying for 7 and only staying 5 it\'s very ineffective cost wise for our friends to do this and we want to be in the same place.

does anyone know of any central hostels which are more flexible on this?

thanks in advance

Hello Bex, welcome to the forum!

I did the NYE thing in Sydney in 1999/2000 and 2000/2001 - and in my humble opinion, being near Sydney Harbour for the New Year is the best place in the world - the weather great, the atmosphere amazing and the fireworks stunning.

I believe that the 7 nights minimum may apply to hostels within walking distance to the harbour - if you stay away from this area, you may find the rules are relaxed. Of course, the issue here is getting back to your lodgings - and with about 1 million people all heading home at the same time, this can be a major pain.

However, standard hotels (three star and above) used to have a minimum 3 night stay instead, and such a cost may equate to 7 nights in a hostel anyway - but all hotels within reach of the harbour increase prices at this time. Reply to this

I went to Sydney for NYE a couple of years ago. I was a bit disapointed to find out that the music you always hear accompanying the fireworks on TV wasn't pumped out actually at the harbor. You have to bring your own radio and tune it in. I wish I'd done this as it would have enhanced the experience. Reply to this
