Hey guys! Im going to South America in June. Theres 2 of us and were getting a flight to Santiago and 1 month later we fly home from Lima. We have never travelled before and are wondering whether it would be cheaper to not go with a tour group package...or if it isnt can anyone recommend anything from santiago to Lima. And maybe some ideas of things to do. Will it be cheaper to book things out there rather than now on the internet. We are also wanting to hike Macchu Pichuu! and enter into Bolivia for lake titticaca and the salt flats. Any help will be greatful! Reply to this

The best of flying from Santiago to Lima is through Lan Airlines. According to my experience, the prices for the same ticket changes according to the country you live (if you have time just try by accessing www.lan.com from different countries and you will see there are some price differences). Therefore, it might be cheaper to buy the tickets once you are in Chile. Depending on the season, which in this case June is not a high season in Chile, you can fly from Santiago to Lima for around USD 350 or even less for a round trip ticket. Local airlines usually force you to buy round trip tickets as the one way ticket will cost you more.

If you want to visit Machu Picchu, the best way is flying up to Lima and then go down up to Cusco. Another alternative may be flying from Santiago to La Paz (Bolivia) and then going by bus to Titicaca Lake and from there to Cusco and Lima.

I would advise to check the Lan website first on the date you plan to travel and then make a decision.
