Happy Thanksgiving to our USA visitors and bloggers - what's the craziest trip you've made home for this celebration?

Happy Thanksgiving - being a Brit - I've never actually celebrated thanksgiving - but I know it's a big thing - because;

Because of "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" - I loved this movie - John Candy and Steve Martin as two unfortunate salesmen trying desperately to get home for the celebration through bad weather and a series of disasters.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Anyone celebrating an ex-pat thanksgiving - out in the wilds of Mongolia desperately trying to get a turkey and cranberry sauce?

Is it more important to be with your family on thanksgiving or at the christmas holiday?

Enjoy the time off and the big sleepy dinner - off topic - did you know that turkey contains a hormone/enzyme that makes us sleepy after eating it? thanks discovery channel! Reply to this

Happy Thanksgiving to all Americans. Being Irish, I dont celebrate it either, but it is always worth taking the opportunity to have an attitude of gratitude for the good things in my life on Thanksgiving day.

This thread is a cool discussion Ali started a couple of years ago, which didn't get the attention it deserves, because of other threads vying for it. Maybe this time, there will be some stories from those desperate to get home, or from expats trying to recreate their American traditions of the day far from home.

At the time this thread was started, there was the hijacking of the international airport in Bangkok, with stories in the news of Americans stranded there phoning home to ask their partner to take the turkey out of the freezer etc and with the latest updates about whether they can hope to be home for Thanksgiving dinner.

Trytophan is the enzyme that sends you into a delightful nap post holiday feast.

The traditional American meal consist of Turkey, dressing, potatoes, rolls, cranberry sauce, (maybe a vegetable) deviled eggs, sweet potatoes, pies, pies and pies. Each family does it a bit different but this is the basic meal. The average American consumes more than 4500 calories and 229 grams of fat in this one meal. Those numbers are unbelievable -- except to the many Americans who do this year after year. My mother always served a fresh veggie tray for those of us who wanted to attempt to eat one not fat item.

I'm a great cook at always cook a very large bird so you are welcome to join us and share in this American experience.
Thanksgiving is the best!! You must experience it some day.

I don't have any statistics at hand but from watching the news over the years I believe more Americans travel Thanksgiving than Christmas. As to your question about which is more important I can't answer. Today, the day before Thanksgiving is the busiest travel day of the year in America. Because of that I have made a choice not to fly at Thanksgiving- I will drive.
I have several interesting stories to share about flying at Christmas but that was not the question.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because you have friends, family and food without scurrying around to find the right gift.

Happy and safe travels everyone!

mmm Turkey. and stuffing...... (I'm getting that glazed over Homer Simpson face just thinking about it).

We celebrate in Canada as well, only a month earlier.

Random note; We also usually have turkey for Christmas and I am completely looking forward to it!!! We missed out on Thanksgiving turkey 😞

I think though for me that Christmas is more important, we have a huge family and more of us come together for Christmas and Christmas Eve than Thanksgiving.

In Canada Thanksgiving has become more about over eating and having an extra day off. What I know of American Thanksgiving is that it's about Football and shopping. They still teach in school what the holiday means and why we celebrate but I think the true meaning is slowly being fazed out by big box companies as an excuse to go out and get super awesome deals on random crap before Christmas.
