Me and my girlfriend are heading over to sydney on 2nd of march 2009. I know its a while to go but just want some tips as finding it a bit difficult planning.

We should be there for a year and will be working as well. Was wondering when the best times are to visit certain places so we can work try and travel then and work when we have to. Taking into account weather and things going on (festivals etc.) The must do's so we don't miss anything. Any tours not to miss and then anything that is travellers must's (e.g. money belt, insect repelant)

Thanks for your help!!!! Reply to this

Hi Jordan,

I am in a similar boat to you mate. I went to Oz on holiday in September and flew into Brisbane. I spent a few weeks on the Gold Coast with some friends and went down to Byron Bay for a few days. I plan on going back in January on a work visa and could also do with some idea on where to go and at what time of year. I am unsure whether to start in Cairns and work my way down to Sydney then Adelaide or do it in the opposite order.
I'd also like to get out to Perth on the West Coast at some stage and New Zealand as i've heard its a quality place. I will only have 9 months left on my work visa as i started it off in September so I would appreciate some ideas on what order to travel and good places to visit on the way and where to stay.
I have friends in Sydney i can base with as well as on the Gold Coast but i have been warned not to go straight to Sydney as my friends reckon i will end up getting stuck there and not doing enough travelling.
All help is much appreciated!

The best time to visit the Great Barrier Reef is during the last quarter of the year due to marine weather conditions. December can see the start of the big wet though, so perhaps plan for October or November. During periods of low wind you will be rewarded with higher visibility and less seas sickness. The best visibility is also found outer reef locations and during periods of little tidal dynamics. Under 15knots is best, many do not book a trip until they see the 5 day marine wind forecast.

Marine stingers can be occassional found in November so stingers nets are set up for beach swimming. If a beach is important part of stay (should not be for some areas though) then October would be most attractive.

Next best time would be after the rains are done, perhaps late April, May or September. June and July it can actually get a little cool and windy, though often very nice.

Overall anytime is better than no time as is a magical place but if you have the luxury of choice then I hope this information helps. Reply to this
