Hi all, I am travelling alone to South America in January 2009. First time in S. America, first time travelling alone. I have a relative to visit in Sao Paolo Brazil, and other than that I'd like to travel in Argentina and Peru.
I am trying to figure out how much money I will require for 3 months? I was thinking $1000 a month, plus airfare. I would stay in budget accommodations such as hostels and family homestays. Does this sound feasible?
Was also thinking of spending a month studying Spanish over there (although I've already started learning.)
Any suggestions for places to stay, things to see, places to study Spanish... and costs?
Looking forward to talking with others about this!
Reply to this 1000 a month sounds reasonable enough, though one-offs like airfares, tours, spanish lessons and even long bus journeys might put you above it.
We studied Spanish at two places in Argentina, in Buenos Aires with Edena (http://www.edena.unlugar.com/) and in Bariloche with Spanish in the mountains (http://www.spanishinthemountains.com/). I would highly recommend both. With Spanish in the mountains the lady running it organised accommodation for us in a beautiful mountain hut - the nicest place we stayed in 12 months in Latin America.
I'm sure you'll be visiting the usual sights in Argentina like Iguazu Falls, Bariloche, etc, but I'd also recommend Salta, Cachi, Cafayate & the Quebrada de Humahuaca in NW Argentina, El Bolson, San Martin de los Andes and Alerces National Park in the Lake District, and El Chalten and Ushuaia in Patagonia.
