Hi All
first time travellers heading to NZ in November. Looking to hire a good campervan, but websites found to pre-book are very expensive. Any advice on hire please? Should we wait till we get there or best to pre-book?
Grateful for any suggestions
Dini

Hi Dini,

Welcome to TravelBlog.

Have a look at campervanhirenz.co.nz - can't recommend any though as I haven't actually hired a campervan.

Given you will be there over the Christmas period I would recommend pre-booking if you're really set on traveling by campervan. Reply to this

Hi,

Looking at the same thing for the moment...should go end of January. It's easy, if you stay for a long period, I would look at buying one...and selling back once you leave...don't really know if there is a market for it, but should be cheaper at the end.

Thanks for the replies! God point about the Xmas & NY period, will def look at pre-booking.
It does appear to work out cheaper to hire a campervan than stay in hostels, as there are 2 of us. Plus its transport at the same time. I've read that fuel prices are a third of what we are paying for in the UK - is that the case?
Have one big concern thought - we won’t get to meet as many fellow travellers as we would in hostels - but am sure there are some like minded people on campsites along the way.....

Try checking Pricewatch.

You'll still meet people, but still have your own privacy - the best of both worlds :-) Reply to this

I'm a Kiwi (NZer), but live in Japan these days. Will be home for Christmas though :-)

I have some NZ blog entries if you're interested in some photos. Reply to this

Great! I will have a look. My other half is really interested in travelling to Japan, but I'm nervous about it due to the language. Don't get me wrong, I love trying to learn different languages and speak 3 fluently, but I'm assuming that everything in Japan will be written in the Japanese symbol language and it would therefore be very hard to get about......how are you finding it? My major at uni was Japanese, and I've now spent about 3 1/2 years here (though not all in one go).

I think you'll find there's more English here than you're expecting - in the main cities at least. If you have any Japan questions feel free to start a thread in the Asia forum, and I'm sure you'll get plenty of help. Reply to this

Hi again Dini,
When we spent 1 month in December 02 we rented a camper van for 22 days and though it was expensive it allowed to you go where you wanted, when you wanted. Camped at a DOC CG in Karamea, at the end of the road up on the northwest coast. We were the only ones there for two days.

An alternative to a camper van is a small car and then stay at motor camps and rent a small cabin or A-frame. You only need to bring your linens as most sites have full kitchens with pots, pans and dishes. NZ is the best I've ever seen for this method of camping. And as there are camps in almost every town you'll not have to search hard for a place to stay.

Plus, should you want to stay in a hostel you could do so and the prices are comparable.
