Hi
I am currently in the early stages of planning my post-uni gap year starting next July and will hopefully start at a friend’s house in Costa Rica. From there I hope to travel around Central America by motorbike. I have 4 months to play with and would greatly appreciate any advice that people could give me as to places to see and motorcycling in Central America.
Thanks Ian M

Reply to this i don't recommend it. there are a lot of dangerous roads throughout central america and stories of freeway bandits are frequently reported from other travelers i had met during my journey thru the area.
be careful!
Reply to this ian,,,,,,,,,,,,,did you make the trip???? any comments or advise?? I gathering information for my trip by car from Calgary to Chiloe,Chile.thanks
Reply to this Haven't left yet decided to do a 4th year at uni. But will definatly be leaving to go there next july. Have been setting things up with my friend out there and he seems keen to join me for the ride. Im looking to get all teh way up to whistler to do a ski season, so i imagine that much of teh route would be similar just reversed. Have found a couple of good book with driving routes through the states and mexico but still lacking on route info for Central America, will have to rely on maps and my friends local knowledge.
Cheers for the input.
Reply to this Sounds like a hell of a plan. Me and buddy just drove through central america in a beat up subaru. No offense to Sheila but I completely disagree with her assertion that it isn't safe. The main highways are absolutely in fine condition. Costa Rica actaully has the worst roads. But Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico all have well maintained and safe roads. With only four months I suggest you make sure you save ample time for Mexico, especially Oaxaca and Chiapas. Honduras wouldn't be a bad place to just drive through. The Bay Islands are nice but don't seem to fit in to a motorcycle trip. The pan-american highway, called CA-1 on most maps will take you all the way up to California. don't miss Zipolite in Oaxaca, or Isle de Ometepe in Nicaragua. We bought a pretty good central american roadmap at a book store, between that map and the ones in our lonely planet guides we were all good.
send anymore questions my way... or check my blog for details of our trip...
