We aren't really sure what is the best way to take money, travellers cheques, cards or just us dollars? what would you recommend?

I found the best way to travel with money is cash and a credit card that does not charge you for using it.I understand that Visa(CapitalOne)
does it and Uy returns some of the IVA spent in the country,You will have to verify this by calling the bank,and a good money belt,the ones with the zipper in the inside,helps quite a lot!also a money belt that you adjust
under your garments is also useful,I use the one sold by Rick steves,
