Wondering if I need to prove I have the means to get home agian once landed in SA
15 years ago, June 22nd 2008 No: 1 Msg: #39534
Im just starting to plan a SA trip for a few months hopfully. I was wondering if it was just possible to fly there, maybe Rio, on a oneway ticket then decide when I fly home (giving me more freedom and not working to a timescale.) Or, like some countries do, will I have to have a return ticket??
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Reply to this

i am also wondering the same thing, i am flying into Ecuador, and i havent decided when i want to leave south america...

i contacted the Ecuadorian embassy in my country and the told me in a very brief email that i will need proof of onward travel and proof of leaving south america and proof of financial independence.

as to specifics of this they said nothing.
an ecuadorian friend told me that they never check anyone..but i dont know if i will be the unlucky one who gets checked.

so, what do i do? buy a bus ticket from Ecuador to peru, pick a flight home from Argentina many months from now, and bring a copy of my bank statement for proof of financial independence?..

I flew into Ecuador and they did ask to see my return flight home (to Canada). I then bussed it through Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile and none of those countries asked for any sort of proof of departure. I then flew from Buenos Aires, Argentina to Quito, Ecuador and I had to provide proof yet again that I had a way out of Ecuador. So....I am not sure if it is because I was traveling by plane instead of bus or if Ecuador is just particularly anal about this. I have since changed my return flight home TWICE at $100 a change so if you can come without a return flight....I would recommend it. What I would do, knowing what I know now, I would just buy some cheap bus ticket that takes you across the border out of Ecuador....and just throw it in the garbage and don´t use it. If you are traveling by bus through the countries, you likely will not be asked a thing. I have ran into MANY travelers that have no return flights and have had zero issues. Hope that helps.

As for the 2nd post....I have never had to provide any sort of proof of financial independence. I would not worry about this. Reply to this
