Here is a private message I received. I am not sure about the answer so hopefully somebody else is. As far as I know one has to be under a certain age and the permit lasts for a certain amount of time. I presume one can apply for it at any Australian consulate??

Hello Mell, I've seen you say in a post about working in australia if you can get a work permit. How does somebody get a work permit there? Reply to this

Hey Mell,

I've been researching the OZ working holiday visa and the age limit is 18-30. Once you receive the visa you have a year to get to Oz to start it off and once in Oz the visa lasts for a year from the day you arrive.
Here is a link to some of the working holiday visa information on the Australia Government's Visa and Immigration site.

Cheers.

Edited to add:
This visa is for people from Belgium, Canada, Republic of Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan and United Kingdom.

There is another one for people from other countries on the site .. just search around a little.
