im working on trying to plan a trip to the land down under. what im having problems with is what city would have the most to offer in regards to sights, etc. i was looking at Sydney yet Melbourne also was on the top of the list. would it be beneficial to make it a long trip and hit both? anywhere else worth looking into? what would be best shortest length of time there to absorb as much as possible?
thanks all for your help! Reply to this

Hi Geoff,

Hard question to answer as Sydney and Melbourne both have lots to offer. Melbourne is known for the arts and fantastic restaurants, and there are a lot of day trips you can do to different parts of Victoria - the Great Ocean Road, Sovereign Hill, Yarra Valley, Phillip Island and the Dandenongs.

Sydney has more sights than Melbourne and has a spectacular Harbour.

I could recommend a hundred different places to visit, but it all depends on how much time you have - Kakadu, the Red Centre, the Tropical North and the Whitsundays (all best between April and October), Perth and the northern region of Western Australia, Tasmania, the Gold Coast, Byron Bay and the Coffs Harbour region.

If you only have a month, then I would suggest the following:

Melbourne - 1 week
Sydney - 1 week
Gold Coast/Byron Bay - 1 week
Cairns - 1 week (I prefer Port Douglas, but Cairns is great as a base to do tours from, although you can do these from Port Douglas too)

If you have more time and would like to include the Red Centre and Kakadu, you could do some tours from Melbourne with the Wayward Bus for example. They do the Great Ocean Road which links up with a tour from Adelaide to the Centre and on to Kakadu. Tours are small groups, inexpensive and lots of fun.

Cheers,
Martina

No worries Geoff.

If you started in Melbourne and decided to do the Wayward bus along the Great Ocean Rd-Adelaide-Centre-Kakadu (Darwin), then you could make your way to Cairns from there and work your way down the coast from Cairns-Whitsundays-Gold Coast/Byron Bay-Sydney. Once again, though, it depends on how much time you have.

Cheers,
