I'm setting off for Australia in November for nearly a year, but I'v read/heard so many things about what to do and when that I'm a bit confused. I heard that it's particularly difficult to get a job during the summer months, so my original plan was to travel around between november and march, then head to Sydney for the last six months of my trip and get a job/flat as i have a working holiday visa. Howeverrrr, a friend of a friend told me not to get stuck in Sydney, as although its a beautiful city, it is just a city and doesnt represent all of Australia. She said she spent 3 months there and felt it was probably too long. So then I thought about taking it city by city, spending a few months in each and getting a job/flat when I'm there, but then that leads me back to the person who told me its almost impossible to get a job during the summer! I was wondering what people before me have done, or if anyone's planning a trip to Australia atm and has any ideas? Anyone? lol Reply to this

Hi Nomii,

Australia is a huge country. You can get cheap flights during Virgin airlines happy hour (12pm-1pm) but destinations are random. Otherwise, as you have the time, I would recommend a Greyhound-Mcafferty's bus pass where you can hop off along the way.

If you were starting in Melbourne, I would recommend the following route:

Melbourne-Canberra-Sydney-Coffs Harbour-Byron Bay-Gold Coast-Brisbane-Whitsundays-Cairns

You could then fly from Cairns instead of taking the bus back.

If you can manage it, then there are three other places worth visiting - Ayers Rock/Alice Springs, Darwin/Kakadu and Perth.

I would avoid the tropical north between November and March as this is the rainy/cyclone season and it can get very hot and humid.

There's always work if you look for it and I guess it depends on what you can do.

Between Brisbane and Whitsundays there is also Fraser Island which is a relativly cheap relaxing time. I would highly reccoment doing it. Great time and generally meet good people Reply to this
