How can I describe this experience? How can I describe my Venezuelan friends? Words are not enough... My heart can’t translate what I found in these people -and it wasn’t just the magic of Roraima (the highest table top mountain/tepuy in the world) or the bonds that develop when you struggle together. During this trip, this adventure, I actually managed to meet a group of people, and not just one or two, but a group, that I would choose to hand pick as friends for life. Each one with their special quirks that made them just so lovable to me. It’s hard to express how much I enjoyed their company and how much I wish I could just keep them in my life a little longer if not forever. To me, they put a piece of ... read more

So difficult to get a taxi on Sunday night here in Sta Elena, been waiting for 30 minutes with some backpackers from Hotel Michelle also going to the terminal on their way to Puerto La Cruz. Finally a private car took pity on us and took us to the bus terminal for 10 Bolivares for the 3 of us. Confusion about the bus that I actually need to take, Francisco said he booked me with Expreso Occidental but there was no one at the counter when I arrived at the bus terminal so a man took me to Los LLanos bus, he said it arrives at the same time, same terminal in Ciudad Bolivar so I went with him. Freezing cold in the bus! Arrived around 5:30am,in Ciudad Bolivar a 10 hours bus ride from Sta. Elena. ... read more

(PS DUDES- MY LAPTOP GOT FRIED BUT I JUST RECOVERED MY HARD DRIVE SO THESE JOURNALS ARE ALMOST TWO MONTHS BEHIND SO IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHERE I AM YOU HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE DATES, AS THIS STUFF HAPPENED IN THE PAST!!! :) Estou sintindo saudades pra voces (Missing home) I hopped on my 24-hour bus to Santa Elena. It’s funny cause I brought like 5 books with me to read just in case, but I didn’t read anything the whole time. I just sat there starring out the window watching the city change to jungle, to mountains and grasslands and rivers, the daylight change to night and back again. I listened to my ipod for half the time I was awake. I love listening to my music but wow... did it ever ... read more

Pre trek: The day before the actual hike we left Sta. Elena de Uairen for a town called San Francisco de Yuruani where we waited for the big group from Caracas, 23 people! them and 3 of us(me, Junko from Japan and Emanuel from Ciudad Bolivar). It was a very long wait, quite annoying and Roger the guide is nowhere to be found, just the porters were with us, then after an hour or so the group arrived and we had a meal at a restaurant, Francisco Alvarez, the tour company/person we booked with said dinner is included for tonight but Roger said no, we insisted so we got it free. We have a crazy driver, drives so fast i have to shut my eyes in fear, another Ayrton Senna wanna be, on the highway he ... read more

We had arrived back in Venezuela well over a week behind schedule. So unfortunately some things had to give - well, quite a few things. We ended up deciding to cut our losses and only go to Canaima. There were too many trips and places left that we wanted to visit in Venezuela but felt it was worth leaving as there would be more than enough to return for. After two days of travelling we had arrived in Ciudad Bolivar and the centre for trips to Canaima where lies the highest waterfall in the world Salto Angel. After booking on a trip we were left with a day in Ciudad Bolivar - as ever an interesting place, as all have been in Venezuela. The usual talk of Chavez, Simon Bolivar, propaganda and graffiti (not to mention ... read more

After having such great times in Ecuador and Colombia Venezuela is a real disappointment. The people are OK and some of the scenery around Merida is nice, but the exchange rate problem makes everything either expensive, difficult or both. That's probably making us view everything else negatively, things that we would laugh off in a country we liked become another reason to dislike this one, and we don't like it here, both of us are looking forward to getting out. We decided to cancel our biking and paragliding plans in Merida and head straight to Ciudad Bolivar to see whether we could sort out a trip to Angel Falls. We did some research on the internet and found the best route was Merida - Barinas - Ciudad Bolivar. Stage 1 went well, we got to the ... read more

FROM GEORGETOWN TO STA. ELENA: -Inraserv bus from Georgetown required us to check in at 5pm, did not leave until 8:00pm. 3 gringos in the bus with me. -Several checkpòints along the way, police stations do a roll call checking off the passenger lists quickly. -Uncomfortable bumpy ride, consolation no rain no breakdowns, road seems safe due to checkpoints -Arrived early morning to a ferry crossing, took awhile, on other side sign says Iwokrama, we are in the savannahs, one gringo got off here, the other 2 in Annai. -Beautiful scenery grassy plains with occasional hills and low trees -Bus stopped at Guyana immigration(Lethem) then crossed newly built bridge to Brazilian immigration(Bonfim) where the bus dropped us off -Was given 5 day transit stay, want to take taxi to Boa Vista but got screwed, the driver ... read more

Wow.... what can I say about the last few days..... How about holy crap!! So having overstayed my welcome a little in Lecheria (not with my friend but with her sister) I decided to take off to see, what is Venezuela’s most famous, and probably most spectacular, tourist attraction, ANGEL FALLS!!!!!!!!!!!! The highest waterfall in the world (989 m high, I believe). This incredible wonder, named one of the 7 wonders of the world, was named so not without reason. Having been to Machu Pichu (another wonder of the world), and many other breath taking places, now I truly understood, why the places that were actually called “wonders of the world” were wonders of the world. You see I hadn’t planned on coming here, but I figured why the hell not. It was a super ... read more

Back on the road as we left Manaus on an overnight bus to Boa Vista near the border with Venezuela. We were given the gringo seats (the only two that didn´t stay back), the buses are over two levels really big things and relatively new, but unfortunately they like to travel with the interior more suited to polar bears than humans and we spent most of the night trying to stay warm, dodging potholes and trying to stop our seats from returning to vertical. A long 12 hours or so and not much to say of Boa Vista, felt like an outback town in Australia. A good couple of rainstorms gave us relief from the heat and we were up again the next day for a long trip to Ciudad Bolivar in Venezuela, unsure how long ... read more

40 hours, 3 buses, 3 taxis, 2 minivans, a hitched ride with a volunteer red cross vehicle, countless searches from security guards and we finally crossed from Colombia to Venezuela and arrived at our first Venezuelan destination "Ciudad Bolivar". Not the prettiest, safest or most interesting of towns but a necessary stop for our trip to Canaima National Park to see "Salto Angel" (Angel Falls) the world´s tallest waterfalls. I have been wanting to see these for years so it was pretty exciting... We jumped on a 3 day tour to the National Park and were surprised to find ourselves on what must be the smallest plane in the world - a tiny 6 seater Cesna - that took us and 2 crazy Italian guys we met at our hostel on the 1.5 hour flight over ... read more
