Well finally I've got around to updating my blog... from the confines of my parents house in Dundee. Yes my trip has come to an end now! So Merida... where was I? After an afternoon wandering around the town I'd pretty much seen all that there is to see in Merida (a pretty town square, the famous Guiness Book of World Records ice cream store, x thousand flavours including things like spaghetti flavour, and diabolical traffic). That being said, the main reason for being there is the great outdoors, which literally surrounds the town on all sides. To the east you have the highest peak in Venezuela, yes, named after our favourite South American hero, Pico Bolivar at 5007m, with the worlds longest teleferico going up the side of it. And to the west lies the ... read more

Well after the Angel Falls so began a long unplanned trip across the far reaches of Amazonia in southern Venezuela. On impulse really I decided against the Gran Sabana figuring I´d seen enough Tepuis to last at least till the next trip, and that the 6 day hike I was planning up one would be tricky to arrange, tight timewise and also potentially unpleasant due to the rain season, allegedly huge biting insects, and so on. So for better or worse I said goodbye to American Kevin, and the Irish couple who were heading that way (albeit to get to Brazil) and tagged along with Damarise the spanish girl. It turned out to be a sequence of ´possibly-the-worst-bus-trip-ever´s. That night we headed to Puerto Ayacucho, a solid 13 hour trip (a bit longer than anticipated ... read more

Hi all, i honestly don´t feel like writing much which is rare for me but it might be a result of my hangover and the fact that the girl to my right is singing very badly and a woman on my left is screeching down a telephone. Despite these distractions (stop saying Alo Alo Alo woman to my left!) i will tell you a bit about Merida because it is a rather unique place. Those of you who have backpacked may think it is common to find cheap hostels, white rastas who seem to have sat on the same chair outside forever, clubs that play a totally random mix of music to try and appease both locals and travellers....but you clearly have not visited Venezuela. Merida is, as the title suggests, a sanctuary away from ... read more

After crossing the boarder we passed cactus deserts, salt flats and were stopped 9 times for passport checks and identity card checks for the other passengers. There is a big football competition here in Venezuela and I think the security checks were for that. After a very confusing time at Maricaibo bus station, we caught a car towards Merida. The buses were leaving at night and we were ready to go by lunchtime. This car was a big comfortable Chevrolet station wagon. My car would sit on its bonnet, and probably use as much petrol in a week, that this one would take to start it. There 6 of us in the front of the car and one in the boot with the luggage. Getting out of the city we drove over the longest and highest ... read more

Merida is a town in the southwest of Venezuela. It is situated in a mountainous area and thus it is somewhat cooler than most other towns. Therefor it has become a popular tourist town both among foreigners and locals. We decided to go to Merida partly to go on a tour to Los Llanos, which we have told about in a previous entry on the blog, and partly to see the town itself and enjoy its sights. One of the main tourist sights in Merida is the teleferico (the cable car). In the off season it is not running on Mondays and Tuesdays. Since we originally planned to go on a Monday this forced us to stay slightly longer in Merida than we thought we would. Because there is no way we would leave without ... read more

Next place we arrived to was Merida. Though instead of staying there we immediately took a tour to Los Llanos, the Savannah plains east of Merida. Los Llanos is a great flat area rich with wildlife. Much of the plains are used for agriculture mostly cattle farming. There are both huge farms with thousands of animals and smaller family run places with 100 cows or less. But in Los Llanos there are also a lot of other animals. Many of them seem very exotic to us North Europeans. All we have at home is moose, wolf, bear, lynx, wolverine and muskox. Pretty plain and dull animals all of them. But here in Los Ll... read more

I was apprehensive about visiting Venezuela. I had spoken to three travellers who all said the same thing: "Colombia isn´t too bad these days. It´s Venezuela you need to worry about". Our original plan was to enter Venezuela overland, crossing the Colombian border. Unfortunately the foreign office advice for Colombia had recently changed, and they were advising against travelling within 50 miles of the Venezuelan border, due to increased guerilla activity. The Colombian Army and the Venezuelan National Guard had been mobilised along each side of the border. So, our schedule was changed, and our contingency plan was to take two flights to reach Caracas (the capital of Venezuela) , and then an overnight bus to Merida, our original destination. Meanwhile one of our tour leaders, "Dave The Hat", would drive the empty truck across and ... read more

Cartagena to Merida Originally we should have been traveling overland to Venezuela but trouble at the border meant that we had to fly. It was a difficult day. We took a 11:25 flight to Bogota, and should have flown to Caracas soon afterwards but, shock horror, the flight was delayed. It was only a couple of hours but it was likely to mean that we would miss the night bus to Merida. At Caracas we were a little worried about immigration. First, we were told you need proof of onward travel, which not everyone had. Second, we were told we would need proof of German Measles vaccinations which no one had as you get the jab as a child. Neither was a problem, it was just a long wait to get through. The last bus leaving ... read more

Travelling by bus, usually for several hours on end, means you get to meet and chat to a lot of different and interesting people (In between watching badly dubbed pirate DVDs). On the bus to Mexico I met Keith, an English guy who was sharing with me, in quite some detail, the relative qualities of prostitutes from around the world (Thai are the best, I'm told). Then in Cuba there was Karl Marks (his name, honestly), a boxing coach and Christian fundamentalist (with the emphasis on mentalist) who preached to me about the new world order that God was about to install on the human race. Add to that the American girl in Panama who had just completed a 28 day water-only detox diet. I call it a detox diet, though it was explained to me ... read more
