Mérida. If you ever come to South America and you want a serious adrenaline high, you NEED to come to Mérida. There´s everything under the sun here (and a dang hot sun it is) to put your stomach in your mouth, make you want to scream and pee your pants, and stop your heart, all at the same fabulous time! Today we were suckered into going Canyoning. Now, I really had no idea what that is... it´s basically start at the top of a mountain and follow a river all the way down. Jumping off of rocks, sliding down rock faces, and rapelling with full climbing equipment down three MASSIVE waterfalls. We started at about 9am... 8 of us and 2 guides got dropped off on top of a mountain (up switchbacks that make Hudson Bay ... read more

Ok, I HAD to tell ya´ll about this crazy crazy bus ride that we thought would NEVER end. So Im travelling with a girl from Philadelphia... she´s such a beautiful hippy; super tall - we actually both are EXACTLY 182cm tall - we measured, has these looong dreadlocks, sells jewlery on the street and is an outward advocate of Chavez (you´ve heard me mention him and his crazy politics... he´ll get himself re-elected, even if he has to pull a Bush and cheat to win. kinda ironic, no?). Anyway, she´s 25 and in her 7th or 8th month of travelling and is just a kind and gentle and warm person. We met while we were both staying at Rebeca´s place, and it was just kinda logical for us to travel together as it seems that there ... read more

Hola from Merida in the Venezuelan Andes. We spent the first night here after arriving from Puerto Colombia - quite a dramatic 2 day drive that takes you from the coast up to (I think) about 3000m. We had our only night wild camping on this section of this trip to split the drive up, and I´ve got to admit, it´s not what I had in mind as being the type of camping we would be doing - we ended up pitching our tents next to a motorway tolbooth! I think it´s a security thing for this part of the world, as we couldn´t pitch our tents until dark, and we had to strike a deal with the national guard patrolling the tolbooth. But it was a bit weird, as it was also a truckers stop, ... read more

After a looooooooooong trip, Merida has finally received its much wanted guest. After a few days in Stockholm meeting friends and my sister (thanks to all of you), then a great weekend in Oslo with the spectacular Thomas B (muchas gracias) and his friends, who took me to his sailboat and to the fantastic nightlife of Oslo, I have finally arrived in Merida, Venezuela. Via London and Miami, the plane landed in Caracas. Since I did not have anything booked from Caracas, I started investigating the possibilities to get to Merida. Very interesting is that you can bargain about everything here, flight tickets, currency etc. It´s like being in Bill Clinton-land, everytyhing´s a greyzone. My first impression is that everyone tries to rip you off. Starting at the airport where lots of "new friends" offer to ... read more

Here evereything began Well, not exactly: I've been a cyclist since I was 6 years old, and have used bike both as a vehicle and for sport & travel ever since then. But Venezuela was the very moment when I understood that from then and on I was gonna travel abroad only by bike. It happened after I noticed that though the places I saw during my 2 weeks of cycling in Venezuela weren't the most beautiful I had seen in South America, the strongest experience came from the cycling days. Danny Rup signing in the bureauThe sign at the entry of the little village Piniango, at the Venezuelan Ands (see picture below), tells some fact about the village: 3000 habitants (a wild exaggeration, in my opinion; or maybe they counted also the cows); 2320 meters ... read more

First stop in Venezuela was the border town of Santa Elena - nothing much to see here, but it was so exciting to be able to speak a few words of Spanish and be understood!! (I did try with the Portuguese, and thought that with 50-ish days in Brazil I might get somewhere, but was still getting mostly blank looks by the time we left!). Next stop was Cuidad Bolivar, the base for Canaima national park and Angel Falls. This was also the place where I discovered the joys of trying to use an ATM in Venezuela. Either they are switched off, or don't accept international cards, or if you get far enough, they will ask you what language you want, and then when you choose English, they give you instructions in Spanish anyway! By this ... read more

With my Columbian visa nearly expired I decided to cross the border to Venezuela to acquire a new stamp for Columbia and explore a bit of the other black sheep member of the South American family. The plan first and foremost was to renew my visa for Columbia and then get an idea of whether I would want to return to Venezuala for more exploration. I boarded a bus from Buceramanga at 6 am to the border city of Cucuta, which was 6 hours by bus. With only 2 hours sleep from the previous night I wanted to sleep but there was no way it was going to happen. The whole stretch of road traveled weaved through steep mountains reaching heights of 2-3000 meters. It was my first drive through the mountain ranges of the ... read more

Dear All Covered a lot of miles since we last spoke, unfortunately picking the busiest time of year as all of Venezuela have been on holiday too! Didn’t really notice it in Mérida as you expect a city to be busy and it can absorb more people. Pico Espejo Tried to buy a ticket for the teleferico on the 2nd but was told it was fully booked until the 6th, which is mad as it´s pretty pricey at 42 bols a time, about 11 quid! But it is the highest and longest in the world and I like these sort of things! Decided to queue in the morning in the hope of someone not turning up for their reservation, despite being there at 6.30am I was behind at least 60 other people and the gates didn´t ... read more

I trust everyone's been getting merry and fat!!! Xmas Eve Cerrado (closed)- the favourite word of la continent! Even though there’s plenty of people walking round the streets at night the only places open are the burger vans and street food joints! Had a weird sweet pancake with cheese and ham for tea and an early night! Xmas Day I've been spending most of my time here in Merida with Will and Michael from UK and US, failing to find anything at all open we got a taxi to the hot springs up in the mountains, thinking it would be a nice tranquil spot to chill out. Got there to find it packed full of mainly teenagers with reggaeton blasting out the speakers! Still, they had beer so settled into the 37 degrees water with an ... read more
