As of yesterday, I can officially say I’ve been to Uruguay! I went with ISA on a day trip to Colonia del Sacramento, a tiny city on the coast that’s only a three hour ferry ride away from Buenos Aires. It was declared a UNESCO world heritage site back in the 1990s. The whole city is full of quaint architecture and cobblestone streets—a refreshing change from life in the big city. There are a lot of shops run by local artisans (and a lot of tourist trap shops as well), so the main thing we did was eat and shop. When I heard we were going to take a ferry, I figured our seat would be a lawn chair on an open air deck, but this ferry was substantially more comfortable. There was a mini-arcade, a ... read more

After a week in the city I wanted to escape for a little retreat as they say and see some new sights. After hearing about a one hour ferry trip from the port of Buenos Aires to Colonia, it sounded ideal. I booked a night in a hostel and hopped on a ferry on the Tuesday morning. As we pulled up to the harbour I knew I was in for a treat as I could already see Palm Trees! Yes, the water was a little on the muddy side, but apparently it´s due to sediment and is perfectly clean. I hope so because I enjoyed a little dip and the water was definitely a lot warmed than Southend on Sea. I soon found my hostel located in a beautiful cobbled street. In fact the whole place ... read more

Greatings from the 3rd country of my trip - Uruguay! 3 countries in less then 3 weeks not bad eh? Unfortunately I don't think im going to see much more of Uruguay then the town that im currently in, Colonia, as tomorrow I head back to BA for a 3rd, though probably not last, time. I arrived back in BA on Sunday and headed back to my traditional stomping ground at the Hostel Estoril. (Have you stayed too long when the staff know your name?) I bumped into a few old faces and several new ones so had a few drinks whilst watching the football (again). I had planned to do a language school this week in BA but said few drinks meant I slept in on Monday and didnt register in time. Ah well I ... read more

Our friends from Portland, Steve and Barbara, joined us for six busy, fun filled days in Buenos Aires. The day before their departure, we boarded the ferry rapido for a one hour trip to Colonial Del Sacramento, Uruguay. Our passports were stamped and we spent the day in this very well preserved, historical town (UNESCO site). Cobblestone streets, original stone entrance and draw bridge, 1930 cars ,some working some not -- you get the picture! This was a laid back, relaxing day, far from the hustle of Buenos Aires, but only a one hour boat ride away.... read more

Geo: -34.4771, -57.8386Breakfast - they certainly serve some putrid coffee here, a cortado out of a machine. Hard little bite-sized buns, ham, cheese, butter, jam, Tang ... nothing special, but enough to get you going for the day. The hotel does a pretty bad job of keeping up with the breakfast eaters, because they are seemingly always out of something, and you end up waiting for more cheese, meat, buns, etc. The hostel has a pretty nice sitting area with a big-screen TV - and who knew that there was now a Much Music Europe? I sat around for a bit, relaxing, watching music videos, and waiting for more cheese, meat, buns, etc. :) Off to an exchange office to change some money - I'm off to Uruguay today!!! I ended up waiting in line for ... read more

The bus from Montevideo to Colonia del Sacremento was fairly uneventful. We both slept our way through it. It was a civilised 3 hour journey on a comfortable bus passing through green fields and countryside. It was good to see greenery again after the constant desert and dusty villages of northern Chile and Peru, which can start to look quite drab. The bus terminal at Colonia was small and efficient, and just a short walk from the centre. In fact, Colonia is pretty small and everything is a short walk away. Firstly, we had to find somewhere to stay. We abandoned our usual tactic of booking the day before through hostelbookers.com, usually securing a good bargain, and feeling confident that we had somewhere decent to rest our heads for the night, mainly because all the online ... read more

Hola Amigos! We traveled to Uruguay today to visit the Unesco world heritage town of Colonia. Before we could start our adventure we had to get through the ferry boarding system. We went to 5 different desks - one to tell the guy where we wanted to go, one to pay for the ticket, another for them to rip off one portion of our ticket stub, another to go through imigration, and finally another to board the boat. We literally were the last ones to jump on board. Thank goodnesss we made it because we had a wonderful sunny day. Colonia switched hands between the Portugese and the Spanish many times over the years. This is evidenced by the different types of cobble stone streets. The Portugese streets are made with perfectly placed stones but with ... read more
