From Paraguay we decided to shoot straight across to Uruguay. We had already been to Argentina and only had 3 weeks before we had to be in Rio for the start of the Dragoman tour. Leaving Asunción in the morning, we took a posh double decker bus which soon crossed into Argentina. Our stuff got x-rayed at the border and we had two very long customs stops. The long straight roads on the open and flat landscape took us comfortably to Resistencia, arriving early evening. Here we found a night bus going to Concordia at 9 pm. The 3 hour wait turned into 2 hours when we realised there was an hours difference between Paraguay and Argentina. Just about missed the bus! We got little sleep on the night bus. We thought the baby across from ... read more

Having travelled for another 12 hours overnight, we are rudely awoken at 6am to say we have arrived in Concordia, Argentina and there are taxis waiting to take us over the border in to Uruguay. With only a day to see the sights we drop our bags at the hotel and head straight out. We decide on a day of R & R and, together with the group, visit the "local" spa which is state of the art (circa. 1965) - where we both get massages and Suzz tries out the facial treatments. After a lazy day we then enjoy dinner at a local restaurant where we sit, quite literally, in the road - the table and chairs being on the side of the main high street! We are also treated to a free evening´s entertainment: ... read more

What a relief to finally get into our hotel after a lovely 8 hour bus, then it being sooooo damn cold!!!! Our hotel is the oldest in Salto, built in the 1800´s, very cute, but no central heating so very very cold!!!!! The photo´s don´t really do it justice. After a few hours sleep, we hoped on a local bus (yes we actaully got on another bus, after sitting on one for 8 hours), to the hot springs. What a perfect way to get over a night bus, and aclimatise to the cold???!!! (Alana, your jacket has come in very very handy, mind you i was swearing for a while!!!). Spent the day in the hot pools, Kate even had a massage - after caring around backpacks it was needed!!! and yes eating and drinking!!! The ... read more

Hola : ) Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay, was our next destination. We arrived by a very swish, stylish, fast ferry from Buenos Aires - full of the elite people from BsAs on their hols. Montevideo is a lovely city, with many sandy beaches, on the Rio de la Planta sea. Compared to the hustle of BsAs, it is a sleepy city- but still has enough going on. The people in Uruguay are really friendly, but havent found any that speak English (not that surprising, I suppose, as we are in SA!) - this has been great for practising our Spanish. The night life in MVo, like BsAs, starts late and ends late - the old town is the place to go for good bars. We took a short bus ride along the coast (1.5hrs) ... read more

- Food: Mate drinkers galore. Chivito (big sandwich with beef, ham, fried egg, lettuce, cheese and bacon - yum) - Area: Big street market but with crowded animals, lovely thermal bath hotel in the middle of nowhere and very manky bus station. - People: As with Montevideo, I was ignored or treated warily due to being female and on my own (but where is my husband?!). Their Spanish less intelligible to me and mine to them - Weather: The biggest thunderstorm I´ve ever seen and constant torrential rain I´ve just realised how very long and detailed my entries are becoming now I´m on my own so can write more detailed notes! Is anyone still reading? Sun 10th: The morning in Montevideo was spent wandering the even more empty streets for the obligatory Sunday street market. Which ... read more
