27th December Definitely the most laid back capital that i had encountered in South America. checked into ALbergue Juvenil in the morning to catch up with Elliot and Obere. and after a few hours of sightseeing, i was ready to leave that evening. Admittedly, i didnt give Montovideo much of a chance. it was nice to see, but not much to do. though the weekends are meant to be more happening. and walking around the streets, Uruguay definitely was blessed with some of the more beautiful women in South America!... read more

Well, well well merry christmas to all those who didn´t get my message which is all of you cause my phone dosn´t work out here haha....it´s been a busy week in Montevideo which to be honest is in my opinion a bit of an under rated city. the week kicked off with a trip behind enemy lines to the Venue which staged the first ever world cup final but more importantly the birthplace of Australia´s 2006 world cup qualification. I met a brazilian guy equally interested in my desire to visit the stadium (rafael...sorry about the spelling) and headed out there in gale force winds and buckets of rain. we arrived at the stadium and managed to sneak in at gate 11 for some photo ops of the field. Although as the rain had not eased ... read more

More site seeing, souvenir shopping, markets, beach and family time... Jos and I have hit the beach as often as possible, we are looking very brown!!!! My lovely cousin passed on some threatre tickets to a ballet production of Swan Lake at the uruguayan Opera House...An unforgettable night once AGAIN! Christmas has come and gone with a very emotional time for all of us , who knows when I´ll spend christmas in Uruguay again... Jos went off with all the fire works at midnight, he stocked up before hand. By midnight the whole city goes to the streets and lets off their fire works!! The noise and colours of it all, we´ll never forget! Then it was on to eating traditional uruguayan bbq meal ´asado´ and more traditional drinks. By 5am it was all over, we ... read more

After the chilled out atmoshpere in Punto Del Diablo, it was time to hit another capital city, Montevideo. We got there early afternoon and went ot check out the city. it was really relaxed for a capital, againm i think people could quite easily fill the day drinking coffee and paople watching. we then wandered to the port where there is a great food market. It consisted of lots of Barbeque grills serving anthing from fish caught fresh that day to tripe and glands!! We decided it would be a great place to come back to later for dinner but when we returned at a good time to eat in South America (about 9pm) we discovered it closed at 5, doh!! instead, we found ourselves having another slightly randon set menu including Knorr soup!! we also ... read more

Avant cela, on a passé ... read more

Our first quest for the day was getting to the Estadio Centenario. This is the stadium that hosted the first ever football World Cup in 1930. Beginning a great tradition of home advantage in this competition, Uruguay defeated Argentina 4-2 in the final. As everyone knows, the process of selecting the host city for major sporting events takes years - London had been working on its bid for the 2012 Olympics for a couple of years before being awarded the games last year. But get this... Uruguay have already launched their campaign to host the 2030 World Cup, with an official logo, t-shirts and everything. We fully support this idea - for the centenary it's an appealing choice to return to where it all started. Whether Uruguay's infrastructure is up to it is a different question, ... read more

Sorry we've been scarce for a few days. Since we've last written we spent a little more time in Buenos Aires and then made way across the pond to Montevideo, Uruguay via a big water taxi called the BuqueBus. Crappy wifi reception at the Radisson prevented us from being able to write any new blog entries or check email for two days. Now we're back at robert's place in BA, with some decent internet access. As far as Montevideo goes, it's a heck of a lot smaller than BA. There's a lot less traffic and everyone seems to be moving at a much slower pace. For example one of the first things we noticed here was that when attempting to cross the street on foot, cars actually stopped for you. Even when there wasn't a stop ... read more

Hello again Our adventure has reached urugauy or as Homer Simpson would call it´u r gay´ . Uruguay is a restfull backwater in South America where the people pride themselves on being calm and not hot headed latina types. It is also different as in many places the people only speak spanish and not the variant Spanglish in which we seem to have become fairly proficient. We caught a huge ferry across the river de plata from buenos aires and our first night in urugauy was spent in a place callled Colonia. Where not much seems to happen. We went to a traditional Uruguan farm where we learnt about cheese, wine etc and ride horses which was a good laugh, especially when one of the horses bit a guy on the tour, luckily he was ok ... read more

So, another overnight 17hr bus journey and another country...Uruguay, the capital Montevideo to be exact. We landed mid-morning and arranged some accommodation via the tourist office in the Tres Cruces bus station which, should you ever land there, is a pretty cool bus terminal with its own shopping centre upstairs. The only bad thing is that it's a few km walk from the centre of town and thus needs a cab / bus to reach it. We were only going to be here a few days, and this was Saturday, the day the Mercado Central is supposed to be at its best, so we wandered along there to check it out. Not in perhaps the best part of this generally shabby town, near the docks, the market was buzzing that Saturday afternoon with locals & tourists ... read more
