After a long flight via Sydney, Auckland and Santiago we arrived in Buenos Aires, only 1 hour late. BA is a very impressive city. We did a half day tour with Monica and four Aussies, and are looking forward to returning here for 6 days at the end of our trip. Interesting architecture and lovely parks. We had steak on Saturday night and it well and truly lived up to its our expectations. We both agreed it was the best we had ever tasted and the Tbones from Coles on return will be pretty ordinary by comparison. We had to have steak two nights in a row. Sunday was a lazy day, transiting to our ship. There´s about 2200 passengers, around 60% yanks we think, but we are flanked by Adelaideans on either side of our ... read more

Spent February 10-13 visiting Montevideo and Punta del Este, Uruguay. If we hadn't gone on a tour on the 11th, our opinion of Montevideo would have been very different. On Saturday, the 10th, we simply walked around town and looked around. Most of the stores were closed in the afternoon and outdoor restaurants and small kiosks were open as well as the Port Market and the Museo del Carnaval. They had a wonderful display of Carnaval masks, costumes, and paintings. I meant to return and take pictures to show everyone on the ship attending Carnavale in Rio but was too busy. Almost got ripped off buying a bracelet in the tourist center. When I purchased it I said I'd wear it. It fell off my wrist before I took two steps. It was obviously broken and ... read more

It was a sad sad day when we had to pack up that cabaña and head back into the bustle of city life again. Although, the 'big' city in Uruguay is Montevideo..and there are only about 1 million people there I think - and 3 million in the entire country (so it's really not THAT big) It´s an awesome country...if i haven´t said that before...a million times...Montevideo was cool too - old buildings and pretty parks..If i move here, i'd live in Montevideo for awhile. We did a little shopping (really holding out for Buenos Aires though..) and wandered around ¨Old Town¨ and along the harbour walk (much like the seawall..but not in a big park) and had a fabulous all you can east Asado (bbq). With our eyes set on being in Buenos Aires for ... read more

Our first border crossing and everything went ok! However, we didn´t have to fill in any immigration paper and hopefully, they will let us out again. We had to stop for 4 hours at the border and the Argentines travelling on the bus with us explained that the relationship between Argentina and Uruquay is strained. This is as Uruquay is polluting the ´brown´ Rio Parana with industrial paper production. It seems like we need to correct our last entry as the Argentines clearly mind that the water is so brown.... What can we say about Montevideo? The first impression is that this city has vast potential, but potential it is! The sea promenade and port around the old city centre is by all means the ugliest promenade Em and Frankie have ever seen. It is fronted ... read more

Greetings from Uruguay! Tour is over and i am once again wondering the globe solo. Once we left Ushuaia, we only stopped once on the way back up to Buenos Aires. Our driver was in a rush to get home early to a friends wedding, so unfortunately for us, that meant waking us up at 5 am for 15 hour drive days and camping by the side of the road. But by the middle of the first drive day, it warmed up enough in the truck to layer down to short sleeves. And by the second day, we were able to walk around outside in short sleeves. It was a bloody miracle. (And now i am SO curious to know why the Pacific side was so cold but as soon as we started up the Atlantic, ... read more

Hi all- Buenos Aires has been amazing. David from London, also traveling solo, and have become travelling buddies. he has a similar plan as I. wake up and decide where to go everyday. it has been much better having another person with similar ideas. the last couple of days have included a house party with all native buenos aires people which we were invited to. it was a unique experience and one i will not forget. the people were all of college age so we were a little to senior for the entire experience. the people were well studied and very friendly not sketchy at all. we explored the parques of buenos aires and watched the people play futbol and relax in the the warm weather. it only rained una noche but it was so light ... read more

As it has been a little while since my last entry, some of you may have pondered whether I have melted in the scorching sun. Not quite. It is exceedingly hot, with temperatures occasionally reaching the 40s. It is too hot really, and can be pretty unbearable, especially in the afternoon. Before the emails start flooding in about how cold/rainy/downright miserable it is back home, please spare a thought for me sweating uncomfortably in the heat here. And don't get me started on the humidity or the omnipresent mosquitoes. I spent about 10 days in Buenos Aires, and without doubt it is a fantastic city. It has a vibrancy which is hard to match and keeps buzzing all day and night, 364 days a year. The exception? Christmas Day. It was always going to be a ... read more
