NOTE: I am really behind on the blog, but am working on getting caught up. The emails from travelblog haven´t been working, so be sure to check and read all the new posts. Alright, we left Cuzco early in the morning on Sunday, January 21st and headed to Puno, which is on Lake Titicaca about 6-7 hours from Cuzco. After the exhausting trek to MP, we did not want to wake up early on Sunday and head out, but we sucked it up and did. The drive from Cuzco to Puno was fastinating and was one of the few times besides the hike that we´ve seen the Peruvian countryside because we usually take overnight buses everywhere. It´s so interesting because you really learn and see the most about a country by driving through the places BETWEEN ... read more

I have been getting stuck into the big ticket items during my last few weeks in Peru - Colca Canyon, Cusco, Inca Trail, Machu Picchu, and Lake Titicaca. The clouds cleared the day we left Arequipa, so there was a stunning view across the city to Mt Misti and other snow capped volcanos. The drive to Colca Canyon was great, finally no more desert. We made our way through the hills, tussock and other grasses with mountains peeking through. Then we hit the snow covered mountains, driving through a high pass of 4800m. Since we all sampled the Coco tea there were multiple loo stops in the snow, yes there was actually snow! The Coco leaf is supposed to assist with altitude sickness… they are very bitter, so I went straight on to the western meds. ... read more

The Lake Titicaca visit began at Puno, with a “limousine” ride down to the harbour followed by a short boat ride to the Floating Reed Islands of the Uros Indians. Our guide Silvia, explained much about how these people live. A mini demonstration of the island construction and daily life was explained. These people originally choose to live here to avoid the Spanish invasion, but now continue to live here to avoid government taxes. The island are floating, have 2 hours of electricity each day through solar power, the main source of income is fish from the lake, traded at markets each week. Families live together on the island, when inter family politics fail, the island are literally sawn in half and people go there separate ways. One way to solve neighbourhood domestic disputes! A 2 ... read more

Lake Titicaca, where the world began according to legend, is in both Peru and Bolivia. It's the highest navigable lake in the world, and it also has people living on floating beds of reeds. How does this work? They are continually adding fresh reeds to the tops of the islands while the reeds underneath slowly break down. They're actually quite thick and I soon stopped wondering if I might fall through. So, why are they living out there? As the story goes they originally moved there to get away from the Incan Conquistadors, and I suppose found a nice nitch safely within the confounds of the lake. Stevie and I came from Cuzco (where we spent Christmas (sorry, no pics), travelling for 8 hours on a bus to Puno, a city by the lake. From there ... read more

Puno, on the western shore of Lake Titicaca was a busy, dirty city with little to offer and no obvious beauty to show. However, as the place to get to the Islands of Titicaca, it wasn´t too shabby. We started the day early, and got aboard the boat and headed on out to sea so to speak...there was a Naval museum there, though we never did find out what they were doing there... We landed on the Uros Islands first. These are made entirely of reeds, and they float. The island we got on was in 18m of water but was only 2m thick, although this did allow the islanders to lift up anchor and move their island if there was a little neighbourly spat going on. We tested the buoyancy of the island, and ... read more

Lake Titicaca is the world's highest navigable lake (4,000 meters). In the lake, native peoples live more or less like they have for the past 5,000 years. On the Peruvian side are the islas flotantes, or the floating islands, which are constructed by the people using reeds which grow in the lake. Driven to this in order to escape invasions and warfare, the people remained there for thousands o... read more

We had to be in Cusco (Peru) to start the Inca Trail on Monday the 28th November. So we decided to catch a bus from La Paz, stay over in Copacabana on the shores of Lake Titicaca and then head on to Peru via Puno. We were pretty tired when we got to Copacabana so we did not make it to the Isle de Sol, where acording to Inca legend the sun was born. Lake Titicaca is pretty impressive, being in Boliva it is of course the world's highest lake and is roughly the size of Northen Ireland. We stayed one night before catching a bus up to the border and then on to Cusco. ... read more

Left Cuzco with Miggel, Micheal, Christian; Team Danish. And, Abby and Tahnee- Team London. We all rocked onto Puno where we started our Lake Titticata tour.
The floating islands were amazing; there are 40islands in total, all made from reeds. They each take a year to make and only last around 50 years, so each generation has to teach the next so that the tradition can continue. Literally everything is made from reeds it’s completely crazy- and surreal to see. Walking through Inca ruins, listening to all of their stories is amazing- but these people STILL live like this, and you can actually be a part of it. It was really, really unforgettable and I’m so glad that I was lucky enough to see it.
We spent the day on Uros and another island, and ... read more
