Hi all. I´m in Piura until tomorrow morning, then off to Ecuador. Spent a couple of days in Chiclayo, saw some adobe pyramids from the time of Christ and what was excavated from the tombs. This site was found and began the excavation in 1987 so the museums that house the finds are pretty great. The sites themselves look like big dirt mounds but apparently there were some local people stumbled upon these ruins, plundered the graves, sold the findings and an archealogist figured out where the sites were. The crazy thing is the first layer (lowest layer) of the pyramid belonged to Lord Sipan who lived around the time of Christ. When he died, they buried him along with any wives, children, concubines, servants, guards, a dog and a llama (ALL were sacrificed) to keep ... read more

It would have been possible to get from Cajamarca into southern Ecuador in 24 hours of bus journeys, but at my age such things have even less appeal than they did, say, 2 years ago, so I broke up the trip in Piura. The standout feature of the city was that it was actually hot (upwards of 25C) and sunny, a combination I hadn't encountered for 6 months. It reminded me just how much I love the cold, and also hinted at how miserable I'm going to be when I finally run out of Andes to hide in. I'm firmly expecting to simply melt into a pool of John when I reach the Amazon. Piura did provide the best value for money hostal I've stayed in in Peru, but setting new personal records for such things ... read more

To make our way north to the Ecuadorian border we first got a micro from Huanchaco to Trujillo where we caught a cab to the bus terminal (the driver was bonkers and kept turning round to talk to us whilst negotiating heavy chaotic town traffic). 5 minutes after getting there we watched the micro that we had got off go past, but its impossible to know what the different routes are, besides the cab journey had well and truly woken us up! We got a bus to Chicalayo 3 hours north. The buses from Trujillo direct to Pirua 4 hours further on all left in the afternoon so would have got us in late in the day - instead we planned to try and pick up something from Chiclayo to Pirua the same day but after ... read more

I’m starting to think the whim of joining the call of the wild, volunteering in a Bolivian animal sanctuary may have been an overly-ambitious and possibly slightly silly call. But then, that’s grumpy, tired me. Me who has been in 3 countries and 9 cities in about the same number of days. Me who has had to negotiate a whole new set of eating and requirements, confusions and overfriendly locals on a daily basis. And most significantly, me who just had my first taste of crime - South American style … but more of that later… About a week ago I set out, with more than my quota of enthusiasm and possibly less than my due of common sense. The 50+ hours of bus hours ahead were a mere trifle and the call of the cats ... read more

Paivantasaaja on ylitetty! Taas mua huijattiin! Eipa sinansa mitaan uutta..taalla Perussa, varsinkin rahojen kanssa saa olla varuillaan, yrittavat usein antaa tyhmille turisteille vaihtorahoina jotain ... read more

Well, what can I say. Since I last wrote it has not been my favourite week ever. Although I mustn´t complain too much, for I could be stuck in an office somewhere, the last week has been rather taxing in a number of ways. PHOTOS TO FOLLOW! Firstly the Brad Pitts hit hard again with a vengeance, but spared me a one on/one off ratio, so I knew to take a dump before catching a bus, for example, of which in the last 7 or 8 days many we have. Secondly on Thursday 21st, shortly after adding my blog, I went to the dentist as my pre-molar (the one nmext to the front two?) started up again. It only cost 10 dollars and he did a good visual job, but without an X-ray (he simply drilled ... read more

Well....we have moved on a bit..... On Monday morning we caught a bus to Cuenca.....3 hrs to Ambato and then 7 hrs to Cuenca. Our friend Brice (France) that we met up in Mindo was already there with a messed up back and waiting for us. He was going stir crazy due to the pain and immobility so he booked our room for us at the same hostel. It was great to see him again and I am sure he was delighted to see familiar faces. The poor guy has 2 herniated discs so he is in rough shape. Our plan was to get there....get him some what better....enough that we could carry his backpack and get him on the bus with us to Peru. Cuenca was pretty nice....for a city. I am not going to ... read more

Get yourselves a coffee and make yourselves comfortable this is a long one!!! Ok so we boarded a plane from Quito to Loja. It was a 40min taxi ride to Loja to get a bus to head out to Piura. The taxi ride was not without incident. The taxi driver booting out the two women who were already in situ for our fare instead. We avoided our first international incident!! The taxi was held together with sellotape and gaffer tape!!! There was carpet on the dashboard along with dead flowers!!! Hmmm. On finally arriving in one piece we bought our tickets for the onward journey which left some very many hours later and was advertised as the direct non stop to Piura - 8 hours!!! This journey is not for the faint hearted. We headed back ... read more
