Arriving in Lima
Our plane from Cusco on tarmack in Lima PERU 2010 - HOMEWARD BOUND
Monday, August 23rd
We woke up in plenty of time to catch our taxi to Cusco airport at 4:30am for our 6am flight, and to have our promised coffee and toast at the hostal. Unfortunately, the night clerk appeared to have not been told of our breakfast request, but he made up for it by taking one of our bags down the numerous steps to the waiting taxi. For 10 Soles (<$4US), the taxi took us to Cusco airport. The airport was open, but we had to wait a bit for the folks to set up the Star Peru check-in area. I think there were only 5 gates at the airport, and ours was number 2. We quickly boarded the aircraft on time and with none of the major security checks of international flights since we were headed to Lima. After a short 1 ½ hour flight where we could see the mountains out our window most of the time, we landed in Lima International Airport.
I'd originally planned on storing our luggage and one backpack at the airport, since we'd be in Lima from 8am until after midnight. The storage fee wasn't cheap,
Aeropuerto 4D Cafeteria
Aeropuerto 4D Cafeteria at Lima airport and Manoli said she was tired, so we chilled… for 15 hours at the airport! They did have free WiFi just about everywhere, so I caught up some on this blog. The only smoking area was in the Aeropuerto 4D Cafeteria, so we had coffee and lunch there. The airport was surprisingly busy all day and night. Delta musts have had only one flight a day, just past midnight, to Atlanta, so they had no office to speak of and we couldn't check our bags in until a little less than 3 hours before our flight. When we finally checked in, with a never ending line, we went to the departure area and did some more shopping. Again, there was only one smoking area, in a bar where you had to buy something to smoke. Oh well… In both El Salvador and Peru international departures, all passengers had to go through another check in with their carry-on bags being searched by hand!
The Delta flight to Atlanta was on a 757 with individual video monitors where you could pick your own TV show or movie to watch. I watched most of Clash of the Titans. When we boarded, they
Jorge Chavez International Airport
Outside Jorge Chavez International Airport in Lima gave us a light snack in a bag (my wife was forced to throw her unopened ham and cheese sandwich away in Atlanta "No ham from Peru!"), then served a decent breakfast a couple hours from landing. Fortunately, or unfortunately, we landed half an hour early, so they snatched the lost of my coffee away from me. The seats didn't recline very much, so sleeping wasn't very comfortable.
When we landed in Atlanta, we went through Customs and they picked our lucky number for a baggage screen, but when we reached the x-ray machine, the guy asked a couple of questions, then sent us around it. We discovered first of all that our previously (4 months) booked flight to Pensacola had been changed to one an hour earlier than booked, then they changed the gate to the other end of the terminal. Oh well, we finally made it to Pensacola and home sweet home. Another great adventure and vacation under our belts… mine being 5 pounds lighter. If you are interested, I'm writing a "Thoughts and Recommendations" for both the Inca Trail and the Amazon to be posted soon.
