written by Miss Wendy O I lie. Paracas actually but for poor travellers. It's all the same I'm sure - penguins, sea lions, pelicans and trigger happy Japanese. We had a whistle stop tour of the Islas Ballestas and Peninsula de Paracas to check out the abundant wildlife sanctuary on the Peruvian coast. Once again, I spent most of the boat trip around the Islas focused on the horizon while Stuart got trigger happy. We then took a trip around the desert peninsula and got to stand on the red sand beach which the locals are well proud of - WOW!!!... read more

It was an early start for us this morning as we had booked ourselves on the Ballestas Islands tour, one of the main attractions here in Paracas. After a small breakfast, we made our way to the jetty conveniently situated at the back of our hostel (the hostel owners also run the tour) for the 8.15am start. We boarded the 25-seater speedboat, donned our tasteful dark blue lifejackets and braced ourselves for an exciting journey into the area dubbed the poor man's Galapagos. The first port of call was to the famous Candelabra, a massive drawing etched into the side of one of the hillsides leading down to the water. It's an impressive sight although I'm not 100% convinced it's as ancient as the locals make out. Something about it didn't look quite ancient enough to ... read more

We've had such a wonderful day today, full of fun and adventure which is just how we like it. We booked a tour of the Paracas National Reserve but really had no idea what to expect. We were picked up at 10.30am from our hostel which is conveniently owned by the same people running the trip, Zarcillo Connections. Our guide for th day was Luis who has been taking care of us at the hostel since we arrived although it was only this morning that we forged an everlasting bond once again thanks to everyone's favourite bear. I had Jish poking out of my pocket in readiness for the tour and when Luis saw him, he ran off to a room and came back gleefully clutching a cute bunny that his girlfriend had given him. ... read more

Today we were hitting the road again and moving deeper into the Peruvian countryside. We took a Cruz del Sur bus to Paracas and were very impressed with the service. We were most concerned about Lima's bus stations having heard so many bad travellers' stories but we needn't have worried at all. The Cruz del Sur bus depot was nice and enclosed with guards at every entrance. The security to board the bus was as strict as at any international airport and the staff were as professional and friendly as you would expect from any major airline. Not only was the second class seat very roomy and comfortable but we got stewardess service on board too. Lunch was included in the ticket price (45 Soles each, about £8) although I ended up only eating the dessert ... read more

After my short pit stop in Buenos Aires I was off to Peru to meet up with Luis Vasquez, a once proffesional Surfer and currently a Board maker and surf instructor. Luis and his wife picked my up at the airport around 11 at night and we headed back to there nice place on the Arica Beach about 40 min outside of Lima Peru. For the next two days we went to a couple different surf spots and with the help of Luis and a 10 ft Board I kind of learned to surf. Its a pretty difficult sport to get up and ride the wave, but thats nothing compared to having to paddle out there on the board. The paddling alone would make me not want to surf. It ended up being worth it when ... read more

First off, we are a few places behind in our blogging as we have been moving around a bit, and we have been a bit lazy. Expect to see a few more appearing this week! Paracas, is often described as "the poor man's Galapagos". Now we have not plans to go to Galapagos, so I cannot confirm this description, but it slightly plays down what is a pretty nice place which is worth a visit. We arrived from Lima on an early bus (5am wakeup, who says traveling isn´t hard work?) for our first "real" travel experience of this trip. We turn up with nowhere to stay, and no idea where there was to stay, just our backpacks and the intention to strike a hard bargain in a nice hostel. The bus was greeted by the ... read more

A park by the sea!!! I said to Stevie- this is the one place in Peru I absolutely have visit. And both of us are glad we did. At the advice of our taxi driver (who was driving us in circles around town until we agreed) we decided to stay in the little town right by the Parque Nacional Paracas. He made an extra 10 soles getting us there (about 3$). It was a lovely little town, quiet, clean, right by the beach, and Stevie worked it so we got half price on our hotel room (which made the place even nicer). The next day we took a speed boat out with about 25 other people and a jolly bilingual guide to a series of islands. They were full of caves and crevices, and covered with ... read more

New Words: la arena: sand quemada: burned bloqueador del sol:sunblock humectante: moisturizing From Leonardo´s house in Guadalupe I hopped on a bus to Pisco, back towards Lima. Near here is the Paracas Reserve, and the Islas Ballestas, which are touted in guidebooks as the ¨poor man´s Galapagos¨. I got there very early to take a boat. The boat was filled with schoolkids. The ones near me really liked my camera. The trip was amazing, these two large hunks of rocks way out in the ocean absolutely covered in birds (penguins, pelicans, others) and sea lions. The sea lions make a very scary roaring racket. I was unaware of this; it must be where the name comes from. I was admiring the color variations in the rock, thinking it´s so interesting how it goes from white to ... read more

We entered Paracas National Park just before sunset, so the most appropriate thing to do was to sit on top of the truck and have our tour leader drive over sand dunes to our destination of the middle of nowhere...... We pitched up our tents just before the night sky blew over. Our tents were literally between sand, sand mountains and more sand. No trees, houses, people or perros. Just us and a lot of sand. So we sat by the fire, stared at the stunning stars and shared ghost stories. Then we woke at 5am to get back to civilisation and to visit the ' poor mans Galapagos island'. Here we were a metre away from sealions, penguins, pelicans and the most amount of bird crap I have ever seen. After our boat journey we ... read more

... read more
