- FOOD: Rip off in the restaurants surrounding the plaza. - AREA: So full of their official flags which are rainbow coloured it feels like a gay pride is going on. Very touristy and the prices reflect that. Big plaza with huge cathedral. The area of San Blas has narrow cobbled streets and is nicer to stay in. - PEOPLE: Lots in traditional dress, but only for the tourists sake. Selling everything you could (and couldn't) want. - WEATHER: Typical Andean, high altitude - hot in day, freezing at night. Wed 15th June: The bus arrived in Cuzco (Inca meaning 'belly button of the earth') early - a first but a pain as it was only 4am. Thank god the hostel I went to had space. Got a room to myself with a double bed and ... read more

Hello again! We´re in Cusco, Peru. Otherwise known as the Gringo Capital of South America. This place is overrun with tourists. People from all over congregating here in this one South American city. Why? To visit lots of Inca ruins, of course. The Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, ruins within spitting distance of town. In just over a week it'll be even crazier for Inti Raymi (June 24th). As it is, one can´t walk around without being bombarded by people selling everything including: water, water bottle holders, finger-puppets, alpaca sweaters and hats, postcards, water color paintings, film, batteries, tours, books, restaurant services, photo opportunities, shoe-shine, etc. You name it, someone on the street is probably selling it. Walking around town is an obstacle course trying to avoid all the salesmen. We have been trying to enjoy the ... read more

Caught our flight from Santiago OK and made the connection at Lima for Cuzco. Not at all what I expected. Yes it's in avalley surrounded by mountains but the 'plain' in the middle is a long flat slope. Felt the altitude for the first couple of days but we are all fine. Had some lovely grub and some disappointing stuff - still trying to find a decent cup of coffee. Lots of frustrating but unimportant hitches. Fun taxi rides. Superb scenery, lots of walking. Machu Picchu is the place everyone goes, it costs lots to get there and in my view the site itself has equals, but the setting is incredible. Owen and I clambered to the top of Waynapicchu, the tall conicall hill on the rhs of standard photos - it is 2700m above sea ... read more

Arrived back in Cuzco last night after taking train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo. Spent today wandering the streets, went to a couple of churchy type places - Convento de la Merced, and Catedral del Cuzco (really big cathedral, heaps of gold leaf over cedar carvings, heaps of religious pictures, including one with the last supper, but with a Guinea Pig as the main meal). Also went to an Inca Museum. (It is wierd, in Europe the museums, churches, and art galleries are really crowded but here in Peru they are relatively quiet even though some of the art, history, and buildings are just as amazing as anything you would see anywhere in the world.)... read more

When was the last time that you got caught up in a political demonstration, visited an island made from reeds, had lunch with an Inca family, bathed in hot springs, watched condors flying and got woken up by an earthquake - all in the space of 6 days? As you can tell, we've had an action packed week, which began with the bus trip from Cuzco to Puno (closest town to Lake Titicaca) last Friday. The bus was due to take 6 hours, and we boarded on Friday morning expecting to be in Puno late afternoon in time to book a trip to Lake Titicaca for the next day. Unsurprisingly, we hadn't factored in 7 unscheduled stops for political demonstrations along the way. About an hour after leaving we came across a load of logs and ... read more

Cusco was one of the definite flag-on-the-map destinations for my trip. Visiting Machu Picchu via the Inca Trail was the entire basis for this South American adventure so it was a good feeling to be so close after more than 12 months of planning. After reading that it was a 12-15 hour trip from Puno to Cusco, we thought we had stumbled on a real find when a company offered a 6 hour service (in fact the roads and service have been improved). We happily jumped aboard and settled in to stare out at the impressive mountain country that we were entering. Not too far into the journey we ran into some sort of traffic jam and an odd French-Canadian girl wandered up to the ´cockpit' to find out what was going on. On her return ... read more

Hello readers As our South American adventure draws to its conclusion, we´ve now hit our last destination - Peru. Having flown out of Buenos Aires on Tuesday morning (we finally decided to give buses a miss!!) we had a quick stopover at Lima and then caught another flight to Cuzco, capital city of the ancient Inca empire and a massive 3,200 metres above sea level. Everyone we'd spoken to and every book we'd read warned about the potential for altitude sickness in Cuzco. We decided to take our chances without pills (what with vitamins and malaria tablets we're already rattling) and just take it easy once we got here. Upon walking out of the airport we faced a scene similar to the one we'd experienced back in Rio almost 2 months ago. Upon spotting a tourist, ... read more

Amie and I went on a city tour of Cuzco. We went to Sacsayhuaman , which is the Inca Temple of the Sun. Sacsayhuaman is Quechua for “satisfied falcon,” but many visitors pronounce it “sexy woman.” This site is famous for their Inti Rayni, which is the dance of the Incas. Tom Cruise and Madonna have been to Sascayhuaman! It was ironic that right next to an ancient temple of the Incas was a larger-than-life white statue of Jesus Christ, known as Christo Blanco. We traveled to an Incan “Post Office,” and my favorite was the “Fountain of Youth!” After our city tour, Amie and I found ourselves again in the Cuzco airport. We caught our flight to Lima, which thankfully was a large airplane. While in Lima, we hailed a cab to take us to ... read more
