A strike in Cusco meant that Cynthias car was pelted with stones as she left the airport at Cusco on her journey to the hotel. All taxis were banned and no one was able to leave or enter Cusco. Including us who had tracked down a loco taxi driver who took up the challenge of taking us to Tipon. It was not to be. Every road out of Cusco was blocked with either boulders, people or rubbish. The advantage was that it allowed us to get a ticket to Macchu Picchu on one of the busiest weeks and see Macchu Picchu as it should be seen, with very few tourists!...Normally there are approximately 1000 visitors a day and the west side of the mountain is giving away at a rate of 1cm a month!!! The Peruvian ... read more

The three of us did a mamouth 12 hour drive from the delta back to Caracas (well Jason and Katheryn did, I slept!). Arriving in Peru is such a culture shock after Venezuela as there are so many tourists. However, not all was lost as we were going to Cusco to meet Cynthia and visit Macchu Picchu.... read more

Well after 6 days and 4 buss journeys of 10 hours+ across the center of the Andes, ahh poor Sarah and Jason I hear you all cry... We have finally landed in Cusco to check out the center of the old Inca Empire. The town is one of the more beautiful places we have stayed, but also one where you get hassled the most. The city is considered to be the longest inhabited locations in all of South America. The Spaniards built directly on top of the old Inca city, and this has made for the most interesting colonial architecture centers yet. Lots of narrow cobbled streets and buildings built on top of Inca walls. Also this is one of the main tourist spots in all of Peru and therefore some great pubs and food places. ... read more

So my last day in Cusco was Saturday the 10th. I slept in till 8am, lounged around the hostel drinking coffee and catching up on e-mails. My main focus for the day was to walk around exploring Cusco and buying a gift or two for my mom. I spent most of the day wandering in and out of shops in the San Blass district. I found some lovely shops; one of my favorites was a chocolate shop that made chocolate out of coca leaves. The use of the coca leaves has been part of the Peruvian society since the beginning of time. I was surprised to learn of all the medicinal uses for coca leaves; the number one use is to alleviate symptoms of high altitude. It was also interesting to learn that the Andean Highlanders ... read more

We started our trek off really early in the morning on Monday the 5th. We had a very interesting buss ride to a small town called Cruzpata. The buss went off the paved road and put her into low drive to chug it’s way up a switchbacky hill/mountain. In Cruzpata we collected our backpacks and climbed into the back of a truck that took us farther up the hill. There we had a small breakfast before we started the trek. Plans had changed over night for our trek and our group was now nine people, the three originals, me, Evi and Emmit, along with three ladies from Australia, two French Canadians, and a guy from England. Plans seemed to change a lot along the way. The first day we walked about 20 or 25 kilometers in ... read more

Yeah okay I fell off a horse. Not far though, and I was trying to get off. After our adventures in Machu Picchu last blog, we decided to try out the wonders of Incan hub, Cusco. The 4 hour train ride back from Aguas Calientes was a shocker - it was so unbearably hot leaving at 4pm. Some boy started having hallucinations and sobbing, though laura said he was just a drama queen. Anyway, back in Cusco we went and signed up for a horseback tour through some local ruins on the first day, white water rafting on the second, and a sightseeing bus to Puno on the third (what in the name of Ray Mears were we thinking?). Horses This was fun, although the horses were a) too fat, and b) too lazy to go ... read more

Today was our pre-booked tour of a few notable archaeological sites in Cuzco and surrounding area. With our second full day in Cuzco, we had a choice of either touring sites in the sacred valley, or sites around the city. I had a slight preference for the sacred valley, mostly for the scenery, but we got a few glimpses on our way to MachuPicchu, so I relented to Mike's desire to see the sites around town, including Saqsaywaman, the old Inka fortress that he wanted to see. We booked the tour during our first day in town, with a small tourist office off the Plaza de Armas, where the staff approached us outside (a common occurrence in Peru). On the same day, we also purchased our “Bolleto touristico del Cusco” from the tourist information office (student ... read more
