Day 9 - Colca Canyon Our tour guide picked us up from our digs at around 8:00 am. It was a small group of twelve crammed into a mini bus. The group was made up of a mixture of nationalities. All the Spanish and English speakers formed there own respective groups. Our guide for the two day tour was called Caesar and our driver George. After about an hour and a half of climbing higher into the Andes we made our first stop on the Pampa Canahuas (altiplano. At 3000 metres it feels a lot harder to breathe and we have broken through the cloud. So we now get our first good view of the volcano's surrounding Arequipa. El Misti (5825m) stands out from all the rest. Even though El Misti is not the highest of ... read more

Colca Canyon : A canyon that is more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. It´s about a 6 hr bus ride from AREQUIPA. In AREQUIPA, everyone tries to sell you a two day tour to the canyon but from what i´ve heard, the tours are not that great, they are expensive and it´s all done in a hurry. The Cheaper way to visit the canyon is to take a public bus from Arequipa, from the Bus Terrestre (a quick taxi ride from the city center at 3 soles), remember, you should call to make a bus reservation 24 hours ahead bc they get full rather quickly. There are three bus companies that take you 1) Andalucia and I forgot the other two. You can easily get information on how to visit the canyon ... read more

Colca Canyon After being very lazy in Cusco over the Christmas and New Year period, we decided to head to Arequipa and Colca Canyon for some hiking. The four of us (us, Darran and Linsey) booked bus tickets for the evening of the 3rd of January. LM developed some stomach trouble through the day and we decided not to leave that evening. We said good-bye to Linsey and Darran and went for a quick dinner. Returning from dinner we found them at the hostel, they had missed the bus! The universe did not want us to take that bus... We arrived in Arequipa the morning of the 5th. There are three majestic volcanoes rising up around Arequipa, making for some stunning views from the Plaza. The Plaza de Armas is one of the most beautiful plazas ... read more

Hi everyone, first up, sorry about the delay in writing anything down for you all, it's been a busy 2 months or so since getting here in south america that we've just been finding it difficult to find the hours we need to sit down and get it all down in writing! So we're both well, enjoying our time and getting a lot in. As you'll find out! We left off in New Zealand (god that seems an age ago!), we spent a few days in Aukland prepping for South America, and celebrating Carols birthday by going up the skytower for a night out. We done it in style, going for a meal, complete with fantastic views and then hitting the casino for free (budget style) drinks and a bit of gambling to finish off. We ... read more

So, after an eventful weekend in Huacachina, it was off to Arequipa down the coast where we planned to potter around for a while. We got the overnight bus with some friends from New Zealand called Nick and Hayley who we have actuallytravelled quite a bit with since. Arequipa is really pretty and sits below a volcano called El Misti. It is also really bloody high sitting at 2,380 metres (7800 feet) above sea level. They say in Peru that you should try and spend a few days in the really high cities to get used to the altitude to try and combat altitude sickness, but I really felt it in Arequipa. I just felt dizzy and had pains in my tummy. Andrea kept getting pins and needles and we all felt rather strange. Anyway, because ... read more

Have you ever gone into an environment looking for that kind of beauty or...truth that a beautiful landscape can provide? Have you ever gone into an environment looking for that but then lost your trail, drank all your water, ate all your food, and stumbled through cacti, toxic tree-bushes, and crumbling rocks? Well, this past weekend at Colca Canyon Andrew and I did so. And we both now have a profound new respect for all environments, especially canyons. Colca Canyon is the second deepest canyon in the world at some 3000 meters, second only to it´s neighbor Colahuasi (I think, it´s something ´huasi). The colca canyon trek has become a popular one for gringos because it is (relatively) easy to do, and easy to access from the white city Arequipa. It is also a hike that ... read more

During the 30-minute flight from Puno to Arequipa we had an excellent view of the Chachani volcano, one of several that surround the white city of Arequipa. This second largest city of Peru is the home of the Museo Sanctuary where Juanita the ice maiden rests. This Inca princess was sacrificed on the summit of the Ampato volcano over 500 years ago and her frozen remains were discovered in 1995. En route to the Colca Canyon we drove through herds of llama, aplaca and vicuna (all members of the camelid family) roaming safely in the national reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca. During the drive to the pass at 4500 metres we were instructed in the art of chewing coca leaves but experienced little effect. The summit offered excellent views of the surrounding volanoes. Each available ... read more

When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life in such a manner that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice. - Indian saying I am so behind with my blogs its crazy. I suppose I should be thankful that the aipport liost my flight booking and I now Have two hours to kill. It´s funny that, when people say "I´m just killing time" as surely in fact it´s time that´s killing us? So Colca Canyon and a day in the desert voluntering to help build a school, nearly a month ago now. So many different and great things I have done in this time, so many small dreams fullfilled. I just returned last night from a four day hike in Colca Canyon in the Arequipa region of Peru. I had made some friends at the hostel where I was staying, Anna and Patrick, who invited me to tag along with them. They had a tent and a small cooker stove so the plan was to really do it on our own. Many people take a a tour with a guide and maybe even some mules to haul heavy stuff. I havent ever really done a serious hike so I wasnt sure what I was in for. For a few details about Colca Canyon, it is more than two times deeper than the grand canyon in the US, but not as steep of a drop in, and it is still inhabited by small communities of people ... read more
