Manta Ecuador: In the early morning we approached the Bahia De Manta from the North. At approximately 6:00 a.m. we were safely alongside Manta cruise terminal, starboard side to quay. Manta posses the largest seaport in Ecuador, the port was used by Charles Marie de la Condamine upon his arrival in Ecuador when leading the French mission to measure the location of the equator in 1735. I wonder if he is the famous explorer who discovered the Condamine river before heading to Ecuador? From Manta Condamine started his trip inland towards Quito. Today we should find out why Ecuador is such an apt name for the smallest Hispanic nation in South America. The sun rules supreme here, and most everywhere it is torrid. Yet Quito the country’s capital just 15 miles south of the equator, has ... read more

Our Arrival The bus from Puerto Lopez dropped us off at the side of the highway in the town centre which was just over the brdige at 12:20pm. It is easy to walk to the hostels from there. Where We Stayed Hostal Alta Montanita - $12 for a double room with shared bathroom. Warm showers and internet worked well. Rooms were a bit threadbare and chilly at night as weren't sealed and only a sheet was provided. There was a much needed mosquito net. What was weird was that they didn't provide toilet paper in the shared bathrooms. When we first arrived there was some there but it soon ran out. We asked for some more and they told us that we would have to buy it! It is located just over the bridge (back towards ... read more

Our Arrival We arrived from Manta at 12:10pm. There were no waiting mototaxis so we walked out of the terminal and started walking towards town. There we caught a mototaxi into the centro for $1 for both of us. The town centre is about 4km from the bus terminal. Where We Stayed Hotel Albatros - on Montalvo and Lascano. $16 for a double room with TV, bathroom, kitchen and wifi. Bathroom had lukewarm water. What We Did Went on a whale watching tour - $35 for two people plus $1 each port tax. We booked through one of the touts on the main road. Advertised price was $25 each and left at 2pm but they soon went down to $20. We went up at quarter to 2 and booked a tour for $35 for two. They ... read more

Where We Stayed Hotel Mayita 2 - Avenue 107 and calle 101/102. $15 for a double room with private bathroom and TV. Most hostels this side of the river were the same price but didn't have internet. Where We Ate We had lunch in the market for $2 for a set lunch. There was a Gran Aki on calle 102. About Manta There is a nice beach on the Western side of town with fancy seafood restaurants. Near the beach side of town the hotels all looked a lot fancier. Where We Went Next We went to Puerto Lopez - we ... read more

Our Arrival We arrived at 2:35pm from Quevedo. The bus drove into town along the main road, turned left along the main road to the beach and turned around in a dirt area in town. This is where we got off the bus. We turned left and were on the main drag to the beach. Where We Stayed Hostal Shelmar - $10 for a double room with shared bathroom. Room was small with worn away cushions instead of pillows on the bed. The bathroom was downstairs and there was only one shower/toilet combo for everyone. This meant a wait of 15mins to brush teeth or use the toilet if someone was showering. You were able to use the restaurant kitchen. There was internet but it didn't work very well, even downstairs. What We Did Hung out ... read more

My last week working at Hosteria Mandala was much more relaxing – Chantal returned from Switzerland and then Maja got back from vacation. I had my mornings free again. Since the tides shift 20-40 minutes later each day, I checked daily charts to plan the best time for dog-walking on the beach. A few times the ideal moment came before 7:00 am so, since I was generally awake anyway, I’d set off for an early morning stroll. When it’s low tide at that hour the broad stretch of hard-packed sand is full of walkers and joggers. Fun to see so many folks from the village turn out to take advantage of nature’s free gym! The downside of a.m. beach walks is the profusion of pesky sand fleas – I guess they wake up ravenous. Even wearing ... read more

Sorry there haven't been any blogs for a while. We took a trip back to the States to get our taxes done, go through everything we left at our son Joe's house and of course visit as many friends as we could. It all started with a three and a half hour "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride" through the Cajas National Park to get to Guayaquil for our flight to Miami. We were in a van with four other travelers and the driver. He makes this trip twice a day, so he doesn't waste any time. Cuenca sits at 8,500 feet elevation in the Andes Mountains and Guayaquil is at sea level, but you have to go up to 13,000 feet in the park before you descend down to the coast. We left at five PM, so ... read more

This is my 12th or 13thstint as substitute manager at Hosteria Mandala and this job continues to delight and challenge me every day -- never a dull moment - surprises around every corner! Even though it's supposedly low season, the hotel was completely full for my first three weeks back. Once they've arrived, many of the guests decide they want to stay longer than they originally reserved. Sometimes they have to switch rooms to make it work, so I shuffle incoming reservations and move folks around, the giant hand-drawn reservation sheets becoming a jigsaw puzzle with me struggling to make the pieces fit! It's the second time I've been sharing the job, which means my mornings have been free and I've taken full advantage of them! The first two weeks I had to make three trips ... read more

To give you some background on the journal below we were volunteering at a ranch in Ecuador in exchange for a free place to stay. We were only required to work 2 hours per day. The ranch had recently been purchased by an English couple who needed people to look after the place until they were able to return from England. I absolutely loved my time at the ranch! March 30th, 2013 This morning we had a lovely breakfast of fried potatoes with onions, peppers and scrambled eggs, it was delicious. After breakfast we all agreed to forgo our 2 hours of work today and go to the beach in Canoa. We walked down the very muddy road to the paved road where we found a local woman waiting. She informed us that the bus had ... read more
