Today I went on a boat trip to Isla de la Plata. The 'silver island' got its name from Sir Francis Drake and his suppossedly buried silver treasure there. About 1.5 hours on speed boat from Puerto Lopez, it is known as the 'Galapagos of the poor man', since it is home to some of the wildlife seen on the Galapagos islands, such as the blue footed booby, the waved albatros, frigate birds, sea lions etc. The place is also famous for the whales that visit it between mid-June and August to mate. The island was for a long time in private hands but was bought by the state in 1979 and turned into a national park. It supports a dry tropical scrub vegetation and is an important nesting site for sea birds. We were a ... read more

Not sure why I spent more than half a year in Ecuador´s sierra (mountains). Sure, I love mountains and hiking happens mostly in mountains. However, when arriving in Puerto Lopez just for sunset by the beach I must admit I jumped in the air for joy, and wondered why it had never occurred to me to travel to the beach earlier. It is heaven here. Blue skies and sun, sun, sun. It is hot, but not too hot. And the place is a real laid-back fishing town and as it is off season now, there are maybe a maximum of 50 tourists around. As they get distributed over the kilometers of beaches and the various attractions around Puerto Lopez one does not see too many of them during the day. Only in the evenings they all ... read more

The day before we were to leave for the Coast for the extended Carnival weekend, I began to feel ill. But soon, queasiness became obliteration. I felt like an elephant was doing the two-step on my bowels and my legs ached as if I were a teenage boy again. I reluctantly went to the doctor and found out that I had E.Coli and salmonella poisoning. What a great day I was starting… So I stuck it out for my 5 power lectures (7.5 hours of class). The one nice thing about having that kind of illness is that the toilet seat never has time to get cold. It’s still nice and warm from your previous 37 trips. Evening came and I was supposed to take a 10 hour bus to the coast. Hmmmmm… I guess my ... read more

after a very bumpy ride for two and a half hours from Manta on a local bus $3 we arrived in lovely beach town of Puerto Lopez. We have checked into a hostel unknown to us (very brave) and then promptly went off on a whale watching extravaganza. We saw three whales travelling together at really close range. Apparently here there are no worries about getting too close or scaring the whales. Anywhere else in the world and you´re not allowed to get this close but these Ecuadorians are more interested in earning a quick buck than looking out for the whales. It really was amazing though, we set off in a little tiny boat just 5 of us and the skipper and literally drove for about 3 hours straight out to see before spotting the ... read more

Hello all you eager readers, I'm sure you're all DYING to read what I have to write...speaking of dying, there's probably a murder in Manabí just about every weekend. I get to see them in the paper I read every Sunday. What makes them so...noticeable...is the photos. Blood, blood, and more blood. No censoring in any papers here. Let me see, the last guy I read about was sitting in a chair by the side of the road in the evening when a car pulled up and men jumped out and shot him ten times, some sort of love affair/revenge/angry ex type thing that's common here. You've got to watch out which girlfriends you pick...could be the ex of a drug dealer. But don't worry, I'm only a really tall, white, American...never attract any attention. ... read more

I have possibly just had the dive of a lifetime!!! After Cuenca we travelled over to the Coast. The whole reason for the trip was to see Humpback whales breaching.... its mating season and they are trying to impress the girls! First off we went to a town called Manta to check out the fish market on the beach. It smelt pretty bad and Cath nearly vommed but I got up early to go and see the market in full swing as I wanted to see what they were bringing in. They were not too friendly though, at one point I thought I was going to get beaten up by a fisherman for taking his photo!!! I worked out later that he was just saying (rather emphatically) that usually there are a lot more fish than ... read more

Seeing as we´d decided not to go to the Galapagos Islands (a combination of money, effort and boat travel putting us off) we´d thought we´d take a quick jaunt out to the coast instead. 6 bus journeys, 2 boat trips and 3 broken engines later we had seen the delights that Machalilla National Park and the Isla de la Plata has to offer. We´d read that the humpback whales are migrating past this point in Ecuador from June to October so we hoped that we could see them on their way. As usual we started off trying to find a "reputable" company to take us on a whale-watching tour and for some reason we thought that the guy who approached us on the street going by the name of Winston Churchill represented this. Typically we didn´t ... read more

After my high-altitude mountain adventures, I decided to hit sea level for some "normality" and sunshine. I had three delightful bus journeys to look forward to before I reached the coast. When changing buses in one town, I saw a man selling crates of multicoloured chicks! He had used food colouring on the poor little things. There were brown chicks, blue chicks, green chicks and orange chicks. He was picking them up by the handful and throwing them into paper bags to sell. (Pick´n´mix) The poor chicks were piled up "two storeys" high, and the ones on top were quite happily walking over the ones underneath. Meanwhile the ones underneath were desperately battling to get on top (the underdogs? the underchickens?). I thought to myself "this is cruel. This isn´t a humane way to treat chickens" ... read more

... read more
