This country full of snow-capped volcanoes is the beginning of the South America we know from TV. Descendents of Indians everywhere put on their traditional costumes not just for the church days but also for everyday life. Due to the mountainous character of their country they are bit colder and introverted but still keep to the South American standards. After the inflation reached shocking numbers, the Ecuadorian government decided to change the country’s currency from their pesos to US dollars - a pretty strange move for a country in patriotic South America. So instead of the usual freedom fighters and writers, we were going shopping with Abraham Lincoln. It made the country a little bit more expensive than expected, but still within our budget - that was only ruined by Galapagos, which is a different story. ... read more

Ecuador is the greatest country in the world. I had an amazing time in Guayaquil (the port where we anchored) and in the Galapagos (a two hour flight away). The first day in Guayaquil we pretty much just wandered around the city based on the advice of the assistant dean with who we’ve become friends. We went to an artisan’s market where I bought a bunch of paintings and some other presents for you all (Shannon and Dad: I got you fucking amazing birthday presents, so get stoked). I also got this sweet Ecuadorian style linen shirt that is super light and comfortable with embroidering on the chest. We left and went to Malecon, which means something along the lines of river-front/boardwalk. There’s a gorgeous park, a brick path, restaurants, etc and some statues. I bought ... read more

I had been looking forward to this day ever since we arrived in Ecuador. Today was whale watching. Our goal was to find humpback whales. Right now it is there mating season and very active off the coast. The day started early. Everyone met around 8 am for the 2 hour drive to the beach town of Salinas. Salinas might be considered Ecuador’s resort town. Actually its nickname is little Miami, though I think that is giving it a bit more credit. The weather was rainy, and cloudy, perfect for whale watching. When we arrived in Salinas we started walking towards the beach. That’s when we started looking at each other confused. We were walking towards the beach, when we thought we should be walking towards a dock. We only got more confused as we loaded ... read more

Day two I tried to do some good, but it didn’t happen. I signed up to visit the Social Service Mall. (I signed up on a lot of day trips in Ecuador because most of the ship went to the Galapagos Islands. I needed to keep myself occupied, and it would be hard to explore on my own. Guayaquil is a difficult city to navigate.) I thought I would be helping out there, but it was actually just a tour of the mall. It was still very interesting. I am going to write what our field program book said about it because that is the easiest description. “The Social Service Mall was created to improve, through a number of development projects, the quality of life of people with limited economic resources. The challenge is to integrate ... read more

So we left Panama heading south towards the equator. Our first day back at sea was so exciting, not because we were moving again, but because it was Neptune Day. For those who don’t know what this day is I will explain. Neptune Day is the day that the ship crosses the equator. It is a big deal to sailing vessels and to the people who have never crossed the line before. First timers are called pollywogs, I think. At around 5pm on July 3rd the celebrations began. The crew started running through the halls banging on pans and singing. Soon after there was a parade of our professors dressed up as pirates or sea gods that led us all to the pool deck. There Dean Dave explained that we had to prove to the god ... read more

Arrived into the City around midday by Taxi rather than the Bus taking us the full way due to a disagreement between the President and the Mayor of Guayaquil over, of course money. I understand that the Mayor wants the money of incoming Buses to stay In Guayaquil and not be used for the good of all Ecuador because Guayaquil is a successful modernising City and well, who knows who's pockets the money goes to after leaving the City? We managed to find a Hotel (sorta) for $15 and unpacked the bags and went for something to eat and took it easy for the rest of the day. Santiago de Guayaquil, or just Guayaquil is the largest and the most populous city in Ecuador and was founded on July 25, 1538 with the name Muy Noble ... read more
